Reading with a purpose helps the reader to direct information towards a goal and focuses their attention. Reading SKILLS Decoding Fluency Vocabulary Comprehension READING APPROACH A reading approach is a way or method that will help students to solve their problem in VARIOUS APPROACHES BEGIN BY: Teaching learners to get meaning from whole chunks of text Teaching whole words and going on to larger chunks of text. Teaching whole words and breaking them down into smaller parts VARIOUS APPROACHES BEGIN BY: Teaching parts of words and putting them together into whole words, or Teaching meaning, whole words, and parts of words from the very beginning. reading APPROACH Skimming SCANNING EXTENSIVE INTENSIVE READING READING SKIMMING The main idea of a text is quickly identified. Read shorter texts to extract accurate detailed information. Done at speed three to four times faster than regular reading. Works well to find dates, names, and places. Useful when you are seeking specific information rather than reading for SCANNING Quickly reading a text to get the summary of it. Search for keywords or ideas. Involves moving eyes quickly down the page seeking specific words and phrases. Used for the reader to find answers to questions. SCANNING VS SKIMMING SKIMMING – to understand the general idea of a passage. SCANNING – to look for specific words, numbers, details or answers. EXTENSIVE READING An approach to language learning, including foreign language learning, by means of a large amount of reading. The free reading of books and other written material that is not too difficult for readers. Sometimes called Free Voluntary Reading. INTENSIVE READING Involves learners reading in detail with specific learning aims and tasks. To read with full concentration and complete focus. It's not about reading book after book or 10 articles a day. Even if you're reading a single- line quote, you should try to understand what the words are trying to convey. Activity: Reading Text: “The Last Leaf” by O. Henry The teacher will ask the students the following questions: What disease did Johnsy have? Where does the story take place? What was Behrman’s masterpiece?
