Observe the root and shoot system in plants and describe why they are important (S4LT-2) Shoot system in plants includes any part of a plant that grows above the ground, including the stem, leaves, flowers, and the fruits attached to the branch or stem. SHOOT SYSTEM IN PLANTS 1. Stems A stem is the main part of a plant that supports the leaves, flowers, and fruits. It’s like the backbone of the plant, helping it stand upright and stay strong. Types of Stems Trunk A trunk is a thick, strong, and woody stem that is usually found in trees. It supports the branches, leaves, and Mango Tree flowers and provides a sturdy structure for the entire tree. Culms Culms are hollow, jointed stems found in grasses and Bamboo some other plants. They are usually thin and can be either upright or spread out. Thorns Thorns are sharp, pointed stems or branches that protect the plant from animals that might try to eat it. Rose Thorns are actually modified stems or branches.  Herbs Herbs have soft, green, and flexible stems that are not woody. These plants are usually small and don’t grow Petchay very tall. Shrubs Shrubs have several thin wood stems growing near the ground. They are medium-sized plants with multiple Gumamela woody stems growing from the base. They are smaller than trees and often have a bushy appearance. Climbers Climbers are plants with long, flexible stems that use Grapes other plants or structures for support as they grow upward. They often have tendrils or other structures to help them attach and climb. Creepers Creepers have stems that grow along the ground. They Squash spread out horizontally and can take root at intervals, creating new plants. Functions of a Stem Support The stem holds up the leaves, flowers, and fruits, keeping them in the right position to get sunlight and air. Transport The stem acts like a highway, moving water and nutrients from the roots up to the leaves and carrying food made by the leaves to other parts of the plant. Storage Some stems store extra food and water for the plant, like how potatoes store energy.
