Mining How are ore minerals mined and processed for human use? @anthondelfs After going through this lesson, you are expected to: 01 02 identify the different demonstrate how methods of mining; ore minerals were mine; and 03 develop awareness on the environmental impacts of mining. @anthondelfs Do the items have anything in common? ROCKS AND MINERALS! How can we get all those rocks and minerals? MINING! @anthondelfs Do not destroy the environment or compromise our resources. To irresponsible miners, stop destroying watersheds. ― President Rodrigo Duterte @anthondelfs State of the Nation Address 2018 MINING Mining is extracting ore or minerals from the ground. An ore is a natural material with high concentration of economically valuable minerals that can be mined for a profit. @anthondelfs METHODS OF METHODS OF MINING MINING SURFACE MINING UNDERGROUND MINING @anthondelfs SURFACE MINING - It is used to extract ore minerals near the surface of the earth. - It involves the removal and stripping of surface vegetation, dirt, and layers of bedrock to reach the mineral deposits. - Cost effective and safer @anthondelfs TYPES OF SURFACE MINING STRIP PLACER OPEN-PIT MINING MOUNTAIN MINING MINING TOP REMOVAL @anthondelfs @anthondelfs An open-pit mine in South Cotabato, Mindanao in the Philippines. OPEN-PIT MINING - This is the most common type of surface mining where ore or minerals are extracted from an open pit or burrow. - It appears like a terrace or may take the shape of a spiral. - Commonly called quarries when they produce materials used in building: - Limestone, granite, and marble - Copper, gold, iron, and aluminum @anthondelfs STRIP MINING - Like open-pit but not as deep of a pit. - It involves stripping the surface away from the mineral that’s being excavated (usually coal). @anthondelfs Area Stripping Contour Stripping @anthondelfs MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL MINING - It uses explosives to remove the overburden off the top of mountains. - Highly controversial - Usually coal from mountain peaks @anthondelfs @anthondelfs PLACER MINING - It is used to sift out valuable metals from sediments in river channels, beach sands, or other environments. - Associated with gold mining @anthondelfs @anthondelfs UNDERGROUND MINING - It is used to dig tunnels or shafts at greater depths to reach hard mineral deposits. - More costly and risky, both for the workers and environment. @anthondelfs @anthondelfs ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS @anthondelfs SOIL EROSION DUST @anthondelfs DESTRUCTION OF HABITATS CONTAMINATION OF SOIL AND WATER REFLECT UPON - As a Senior High School student, what can you do to protect our environment? (relate this to the upcoming 2025 election in the Philippines) @anthondelfs @anthondelfs YOU! THANK
