It's like a spiritual "laundry" where souls are purified before entering the perfect joy of Heaven. Definition of Term: PURGATORY KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER: Not eternal punishment: Unlike Hell, Purgatory is not an eternal state of suffering. Purification, not punishment: It's a process of cleansing, not punishment for wrongdoing. Temporal, not eternal: It's a temporary state, not an endless one. Prayer and good works help: Prayers and sacrifices offered for the souls in Purgatory can help shorten their time there. Let us talk about the All Saints’ Day The whole idea of All Saints’ Day is linked with the belief in the Communion of Saints as stated in the Apostles’ Creed. “I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the COMMUNION OF SAINTS, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.” What is the meaning of COMMUNION OF SAINTS? According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 962), it is the belief that all of God’s people in Heaven, on earth, and those in Purgatory are linked together in communion, and thus form ONE Church. In other words, it is the spiritual union of all Christians, both the living and the dead. Our belief in the COMMUNION OF SAINTS comes with the belief that there are three (3) states of the Church, namely: Militant / Pilgrim Church: The faithful on Earth who are still striving to live a holy life and grow in their faith. Penitent / Suffering Church: The souls in Purgatory who are being purified before entering Heaven. Triumphant / Glorified Church: The saints in Heaven who are eternally united with God. The bottom line is that the COMMUNION OF SAINTS is the Church itself.(CCC 946) What are the relationships between the three states of the Church in the COMMUNION OF SAINTS? Let us talk about the All Souls’ Day The month of November is dedicated to the Holy Souls in Purgatory. The Church commemorates all her faithful children who have departed from this life, but have not yet attained the joys of heaven. St. Paul warns us that we must not be ignorant concerning the dead, nor sorrowful, "even as others who have no hope... For the Lord Himself shall come down from heaven... and the dead who are in Christ shall rise. According to Catholic belief, the soul of a person who dies can go to one of three places. The first is heaven, where a person who dies in a state of perfect grace and communion with God goes. The second is hell, where those who die in a state of mortal sin are naturally condemned by their choice. The intermediate option is purgatory, which is thought to be where most people, free of mortal sin, but still in a state of lesser (venial) sin, must go. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: “All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.” (CCC 1030) All Souls’ Day, in Roman Catholicism, a day for commemoration of all the faithful departed, those baptized Christians who are believed to be in purgatory because they died with the guilt of lesser sins on their souls. It is observed on November 2. Roman Catholic doctrine holds that the prayers of the faithful on earth will help cleanse these souls in order to fit them for the vision of God in heaven, and the day is dedicated to prayer and remembrance. Requiem masses are commonly held, and many people visit and sometimes decorate the graves of loved ones. The Church has always taught us to pray for those who have gone into eternity. Even in the Old Testament prayers and alms were offered for the souls of the dead by those who thought "well and religiously concerning the resurrection." It was believed that "they who had fallen asleep with godliness had great grace laid up for them" and that "it is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins." We know that a defiled soul cannot enter into heaven. What VALUE or VIRTUE is manifested in the etymological meaning of Undas?
