TASK 1: ALL ABOUT AFRICA In the next slide is the map of Africa. Inside the map, write/state five (5) ideas/information that you know about the continent of Africa, its people, culture, tradition, and/or literature. THE AFRICAN CONTINENT Quarter 2, First Semester AFRICA History has shown us how this continent became brutally colonized by white European traders and imperialists in Congo. Slavery, racism, discrimination, including violence and colonial domination, became the reality of most Africans. AFRICA Called as the Cradle of Life - Anthropologists believe that the first modern humans (homo sapiens) began in Africa - - Large number of fossils was found in Africa and some of it are the oldest fossils discovered Having been denied sharing their unique culture to the rest of the world, African literature takes pride in their identity as a people along with their rich heritage. The Dark Continent enjoys a vast collection of masterpieces, both in oral and written literature, which are highly diverse and at the same time SOUTH AFRICAN LITERATURE This refers to the body of writings in either Afrikaans or English produced in what is now the Republic of South Africa. SO UTH AFRICAN L ITERATURE Although South Africa became independent in 1910, the nation’s varied ethnic constituents have not yet been unified in a harmonious whole, and the tension arising from the unequal relations between blacks and whites is the authentic note of much South African literature. The following are some of the literary forms/genres that defined African literature. ORATURE This is the tradition of African oral literature which includes praise poems, love poems, tales, ritual dramas, and moral instructions in the form of proverbs and fables. Griots are the keepers of oral literature in West Africa. DILEMMA OR ENIGMA TALE This is an open-ended story that concludes with a question that asks the audience to choose among several alternatives. -embody themes of mystery, wisdom and moral lesson. ENIGMA - Refers to something that is mysterious, puzzling, or difficult to understand. It can describe a person, situation, or object that evokes curiosity and intrigue due to its complexity. FOLK TALES The stories represent a wide colorful variety that embodies the African people’s most cherished religious and social beliefs. EXAMPLES OF FOLKTALES IN AFRICA 1 ANANSI TALES 2. THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE 3. THE LION AND THE MOUSE 4. THE GIRL WHO MARRIED THE SNAKE TRICKSTER TALE Tricksters are smart and they use their knowledge to play tricks or to try and bend the rules. Trickster tales are used to entertain and often to teach lessons about how to behave and treat other people. TRICKSTER TALE The best-known African trickster figure is Anansi, The Spider who is both the hero and villain from the West African origin to the Caribbean and other parts of the Western Hemisphere as a result of slave trade. EPICS OF VANISHED HEROES The heroes are partly human, partly superhuman, who embody the highest values of a society and carry with them a culture’s history, values, and traditions. EPICS OF VANISHED HEROES An example of these is the Sundiata from the Mandingo peoples of West Africa which is the best-preserved and the best-known African epic which is a blend of fact and legend. African Proverbs are short, wise sayings that convey cultural values, teachings, and experiences. Example:“ When elephant fight, it is the grass that suffers” (Nigerian Proverb) “A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor (Ghanian Proverb) AFRICAN RIDDLE 1. I AM ALWAYS COMING BUT NEVER ARRIVE. DRAMATIC PERFORMANCES NELSON MANDELA He was the head of the South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, a political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 and was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. (1994-1999) MANDELA Mandela was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to life imprisonment 1964, spent 27 years in prison , became a global symbol of resistance and oppression FAMOUS LINES OF MANDELA “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it” ` Quarter 2, First Semester
