DELOS REYES JR.  What is a Medical Technologist? 2  Medical Technologist - A person who engages in the work of medical technology under the supervision of a pathologist or licensed physician authorized by the Department of Health in places where there is no pathologist and who having passed the prescribed course (Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology/Bachelor of Science in Hygiene) of training and examination is registered under the provision of this RA5527  Medical Technologist/ 3 Laboratory Scientist Philippine Medical Technology Act of 1969 A person shall be called to be in the practice of medical technology within the meaning of this Act, who shall renders any of the following professional services for the purpose of aiding the physician in the diagnosis, study and treatment of diseases and in the promotion of health in general: Examination of tissues, secretions and excretions of the human body and body fluids by various electronic, chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic, hematologic, serologic, immunologic, nuclear, and other laboratory procedures and techniques either manual or automated; Blood banking procedures and techniques; Parasitologic, Mycologic and Microbiologic procedures and techniques; Histopathologic and Cytotechnology; Clinical research involving patients or human beings requiring the use of and/or application of medical technology knowledge and procedures; Continuation: 4 Preparations and standardization of reagents, standards, stains and others, provided such reagents, standards, stains and others are exclusively for the use of their laboratory; Clinical laboratory quality control; Collection and preservation of specimens A person who engages in the work of medical technology: - under the supervision of a pathologist or licensed physician authorized by the Department of Health in places where there is no pathologist and - who having passed the prescribed course (Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology/Bachelor of Science in Hygiene) of training - registered under the provision of this Act. 5 Medical Technologist  Medical detectives Identify microorganisms and analyze cells  Do blood tests Measure substance in blood and other fluids  Identify organisms causing infection and disease Operate complex apparatus, instrument and machines  Use standards and control to improve the reliability of laboratory results Work under pressure with speed and accuracy and precision They adhere to high ethical standards of performance  An individual certified and registered with PRC to run various tests under the supervision of a registered medical technologist or pathologist. It was incorporated and registered at the Securities and Exchange Commission on October 14, 1969 with Reg. No. 39570, during the presidency of Mr. Nardito D. Moraleta. On June 21, 1969, R.A. 5527 also known as the Philippine Medical Technology Act was enacted into law. On June 22, 1973, P.D.223 was approved creating the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). PAMET was officially recognized as the only Accredited Professional Organization (APO) of registered Medical Technologists in the Philippines. PAMET is a national body with forty-six (46) chapters nationwide totalling to more than twelve thousand (12,000) members.
