PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT EVOLUTION OF MANAGEMENT  Management in Ancient world -  Agriculture Revolution in India, China and Egypt (5000 BC) – As the villages grew and civilizations evolved, Managers also evolved  They became priest, Kings, Ministers holding power and wealth in the society EVOLUTION OF MANAGEMENT  Management practices in Egypt -  The huge pyramids of Egypt stand a testimony to the managerial and organizational abilities of the ancient Egyptian civilization.  One pyramid required 1 Lakh men working for 20 years, covering 13 acres, using and moving 2.3 million bocks  To produce such a monument required proper planning, work allocation, organizing, directing, controlling and decision making EVOLUTION OF MANAGEMENT  Management abilities of Romans -  The Romans built vast empires extending from Britian in the west to Syria in the east and ruled it for many years due to their exceptional managerial abilities EVOLUTION OF MANAGEMENT  Management practices in India – Kautilya wrote his Arthashastra in about 2400 years ago  The major theme of which was political, social and economic management of the state EVOLUTION OF MANAGEMENT  Management in 19th Century – Ownership was separated from Management  Mass production made possible by availability of standard parts EVOLUTION OF MANAGEMENT  Management in 20th Century –  World wars forced people to think how to use limited resources in optimum manner  Competition increased, managing large organizations was getting complex  Focus also shifted slowly to importance attached to manpower in business MANAGEMENT THEORIES  Scientific Approach  Frederick Winslow Taylor know as Father of Scientific Management considered management as a science  He conducted a great deal of research to substantiate and prove his ideology that management could be studied and practiced as a science to raise overall productivity of an industrial unit MANAGEMENT THEORIES  Scientific Approach - Taylor  One best Way – Time and Motion study  Scientific selection of workers – Right man for the right job  Development and training of workers – support internal promotion of staff  Harmony in group action – Mutual give and take  Maximize Output – Increase productivity continuously  Cordial relations between workers and managers – ensure smooth implementation of work  Separation of planning and doing – Planning to be done by specialist MANAGEMENT THEORIES  Administrative Approach –  Henri Fayol (1841-1925)  Father of Modern management thought MANAGEMENT THEORIES  14 Principles of Management SCALAR CHAIN
