These aspects make up the “self’s” integral parts, such as self-awareness, self-esteem, self- knowledge, and self-perception. The Self from Various Perspectives  Two sides of Self: “I’ and “Me” - Mead sees the person as an active process, not just a mere reflection of society. He further proposed two interactive facets of the self: the “I” the and “me.” The “me” and the “I” have a didactive relationship, which is like a system of checks and balances.  The Self and the Person in Contemporary Anthropology - Anthropology is the study of people, past, and present. It focuses on understanding the human condition in its cultural aspects  Self as representation - Ewing (1989) asserted that a “self” is illusory. “people construct a series of self- representations that are based on selected cultural concepts of person and selected ‘chains’ of personal memories.  The Self Embedded in Culture - How individuals see themselves, how they relate to other people, and how they relate to the environment are deeply defined by culture.  Development psychologist Catherine Raeff (2010), believed that culture can influence how you review:  Relationship  Personality Traits  Achievement  Expressing emotions  William James and The Me-Self; I-Self - According to James (1950), the “self” has two elements : the I-Self and the Me-Self. I-self is the pure ego. It is the subjective self. It is the “self” that is aware of its own actions.  Four I-self characteristically. These are:  A sense of being the agent or initiative of behavior  A sense of being unique  A sense of continuity  A sense of awareness about being aware  Idea self vs. real self - The idea self is the person that you like yourself to be. - Real self is the person you actually are.  True vs False Selves - According to Winnicott the “self” is simply “the person who is me. While the false self is put up to defend the core form these realities and prevent it from any changes.  Selective Self-Presentation and Impression Management - Self-Presentation behavior is any behavior intended to create, modify, or maintain an impression of ourselves in the minds of others. - Impression Management is the attempt to control or influence any other people’s perceptions.  Why do people engage in self-presentation? - Helps facilitate social interaction - Enables individuals to attain material and social rewards; and - Helps people privately construct desired identities.  Two main motives of attempting to manage the impression of others:  Instrumental – This motive is to basically gain rewards and increase one’s self-esteem.  Expressive – This motivation is about attempting to be in control of one’s personal behavior and identity.  Impression-management Strategies  Self-Promotion  Ingratiation  Exemplification  Intimidation  Supplication  Self-efficacy - refers to your belief in your capacity to perform necessary actions to produce specific performance goals (Bandura, 1977,1986, 1997)  Factors that could alter sense of self-efficacy :  Preconception of capability  Perceived task difficulty  Effort  Amount of external support  Circumstances under which they perform  Pattern of successes and failures  How the experiences are cognized and reconstructed in memory  Five Principles of Goal Setting  Clarity  Challenge  Commitment  Feedback  Task complexity SELF AWARENESS Unlocking the Power of Self? Awareness: A Journey to Personal Growth Self-awareness is the foundation of personal growth. It involves recognizing our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This journey begins with understanding oneself and leads to a more fulfilling life. In this presentation, we will explore practical steps to enhance self-awareness and its benefits. Understanding Self- Awarenes Self-awareness is the ability to see oneself clearly and objectively. It includes emotional intelligence, recognizing strengths and weaknesses, and understanding how our actions affect others. This clarity is crucial for making informed decisions and fostering authentic relationships. Developing self-awareness leads to numerous benefits: improved emotion regulation, better decision-making, and enhanced relationships. It empowers individuals to align their actions with their values and goals, ultimately fostering a more satisfying and purposeful life. To boost self-awareness, consider practices like mindfulness, journaling, and seeking feedback from others. Regular reflection helps identify patterns in behavior and thought processes. These strategies cultivate a deeper understanding of oneself and promote personal growth. Practical Steps to Enhance Self- Awareness Many face barriers to self-awareness, such as defensiveness or lack of honesty. Acknowledging these obstacles is the first step toward overcoming them. Embracing vulnerability and being open to feedback can significantly enhance one's journey towards self-discovery. Practical Steps to Enhance Self- Awareness Conclusion: The Journey Continues Self-awareness is a lifelong journey that leads to personal growth and fulfillment. By embracing this journey, individuals can unlock their potential and create meaningful connections. Remember, the path to self-awareness is unique for everyone, so stay committed to your growth.
