PRAYER Checking of Attendance ATP- ADP CYCLE Prepared by: Mark Anthony P. Catulin LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: Explain ATP-ADP cycle provide at least two real-life examples of activities that utilize ATP. Collaborate effectively in pairs to brainstorm and articulate their ideas on the ATP-ADP cycle Value the importance of the ATP-ADP cycle in maintaining life processes by expressing the significance of energy management in cells. Weight Lifting Running Digestion Sleeping Thinking Heart pumping blood Overview of Cellular Energy and Its Importance Role of Cellular Energy Cells require energy to perform essential functions such as metabolism, growth, repair and reproduction. Energy is needed for active transport across cell membranes, synthesis of biomolecules and maintaining cellular structure. CONTINUOUS ENERGY FLOW Cellular energy is not a static entity but exists in a dynamic cycle. IMPORTANCE IN METABOLISM Cellular metabolism involves numerous biochemical reactions that either consume or produce ATP. WHAT IS ATP ? THE ATP MOLECULE Adenosine triphosphate or ATP is the energy- carrying molecule that cells use for energy. Main energy currency of cells CELLULAR ENERGY TRANSFER HOW ATP STORES ENERGY Triphosphate Configuration In ATP, the three phosphate groups are negatively charged and their proximity creates mutual repulsion. Hydrolysis (water- mediated breakdown) Reaction of ATP ATP is hydrolyzed to ADP in the following reaction: ATP + H2O ⇋ ADP + Pi + energy ROLE OF ATP IN VARIOUS CELLULAR PROCESSES 1. Cellular work 2. Active transport 3. Synthesis of molecule 4. Metabolic reactions 5. Nerve impulse transmission 6. Chemical work 7. Maintenance of cell structure ENZYMES IN THE ATP- ADP CYCLE ATPase (ATP Hydrolysis) Also known as ATP hydrolase or ATP synthase. Catalyzes the hydrolysis of ATP, breaking it down into ADP and Pi. Located on the inner mitochondrial membrane in eukaryotes or the plasma membrane in prokaryotes. ATP Synthase (ATP Synthesis) Enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of ATP from ADP and Pi. Found in the inner mitochondrial membrane in eukaryotes, the thylakoid membrane during photosynthesis, and the plasma membrane in prokaryotes. IMPORTANCE OF ATP-ADP CYCLE IMPORTANCE OF ATP-ADP CYCLE 1. Energy currency of cells ATP often referred to as the “energy currency” of cells. 2. Immediate energy source provides immediate and direct source of energy cellular processes. 3. Versatile energy carrier participates in a wide range of cellular activities. IMPORTANCE OF ATP-ADP CYCLE 4. Dynamic equilibrium It can be regenerated 5. ATP hydrolysis power cellular work energy needed for mechanical work 6. Constant energy supply ATP is continuously recycled in cells IMPORTANCE OF ATP-ADP CYCLE 7. Interconnected processes ATP-ADP cycle is connected with cellular respiration and photosynthesis 8. Regulation of cellular energy levels cells regulate the ATP-ADP cycle to match energy supply IMPORTANCE OF ATP-ADP CYCLE 9. Cellular metabolism participates in both catabolic and anabolic pathways 10. Maintenance of cellular structure ACTIVITY TIME!
