Let’s learn some grammar… PRESENT AND PASSIVE VERBS We use active forms when we are interested in the person or thing that performs an action. Example: The players kick the ball. We use passive forms when we don't know who or what does the action, or when we are more interested in the action itself or its object. Example: The ball is kicked by the players. AFFIRMATIVE PASSIVE: Subject + am / is / are + past participle NEGATIVE PASSIVE: Subject + ‘m not / isn’t / aren’t + past participle PASSIVE QUESTIONS: Is / Are + Subject + past participle TIP: We use “by” in passive sentences when we want to say who does the action. The CD player was invented by James T.Russell. ACTIVE FORM: The charity raises a lot of money very year. PASSIVE FORM: A lot of money is raised by the charity every year. ACTIVE FORM: They are testing the new software right now. PASSIVE FORM: The new software is being tested right now. ACTIVE FORM: People used to buy books in stores. PASSIVE FORM: Books used to be bought in stores. ACTIVE FORM: Nobody has used these notepads since last year. PASSIVE FORM: These notepads haven't been used since last year. ACTIVE FORM: Someone changed the design a few years ago. PASSIVE FORM: The design was changed a few years ago. ACTIVITY: THINGS IN COMMON WHAT DO FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL HAVE IN COMMON? They are both played with a ball. WHAT DO MOBILE PHONE AND TABLET HAVE IN COMMON? They are both used for communication. WHAT DO CATS AND DOGS HAVE IN COMMON? They are both domesticated animals. WHAT DO PIZZA AND SANDWICHES HAVE IN COMMON? They are both eaten as fast food. WHAT DO TRAINS AND BUSES HAVE IN COMMON? They are both used for public transportation. WHAT DO NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES HAVE IN COMMON? They are both read for information and entertainment. WHAT DO PAINTINGS AND PHOTOGRAPHS HAVE IN COMMON? They are both displayed in galleries. WHAT DO SOCCER AND RUGBY HAVE IN COMMON? They are both played on a field. WHAT DO SWEATERS AND JACKETS HAVE IN COMMON? They are both worn in cold weather. WHAT DO SONGS AND POEMS HAVE IN COMMON?
