More important than a law mandating the study of the Rizal course, are the values that the youth can acquire from knowing the history of their country and how a single person contributed immensely to the attainment of independence that we all enjoy today. By reading and studying Rizal’s life, teachings and writings, Filipino youth will gain incorruptible confidence, direction, courage and determination. The Law went through a series of legislative and media debate before its passage in 1956. The political and religious stir it created can be compared to the Reproductive Health Bill debate PAMANTASAN NG CABUYAO |The Life and Works of Jose Rizal 5 of 2011. Like the controversial R.H. Bill, the Rizal Bill had the stiff opposition from the Catholic Church and its affiliate groups. President Jose P. Laurel sponsored the law because he believed that Rizal was the founder of Filipino nationality and the architect of the Filipino nation. The study of the Rizal course is indeed relevant today and will continue to be relevant in the future because of the classic lessons that we can learn from the life of the great Filipino hero. Task: 1. You are tasked to compose a detailed reflection paper showcasing your insights about the study and importance of the Rizal Law and its implications in the development of nationalism, patriotism, and volunteerism. 2. Is the teaching of Rizal's Life and Works course realistic given the dangers and sensitivities of literature as a means of communication in learning nationalism, patriotism, and volunteerism? b. How important are literary criticisms in the study of Rizal's Life and Works? c. If given a chance to deconstruct one of Rizal's written works (both well-known and obscure), what would it be and what is its relation to the analysis and understanding of nation-building? 3. The paper must not have any bullets. It must also cite all the sources used to support or concretize your answers. Online sources such as Wiki sites, Quora, Reddit, Yahoo, Google Answers, and other similar sites are NOT allowed. Blog posts are also NOT allowed. 4. The introductory discussions of the course shall be presented in this chapter. The first part contains the historical background and context of RA1425 in the context of the 1950s. The tensions brought about by the issues of communism in the world., East Asia and the Philippines contributed to the need to craft a nationalistic policy that would rekindle nationalism and patriotism among the Filipinos. Thus, it resulted in the passage of RA1425. The second part discusses in detail the opposing opinions for and against the bill as interposed by Senator Claro M. Recto (proponent) and the Catholic Bishops of the Philippines (opponent). The CBCP contended that the novels contain passages that are clear violations of the separation of the church and the state. They further argued that the Catholic PAMANTASAN NG CABUYAO |The Life and Works of Jose Rizal 7 dogma and morals were repeated attacks made against the Catholic religion in general. On the other hand, Recto interposed the importance of the Law to the Filipinos and how it reflects not only the values but also the defects and the flaws of history. By doing so, Filipinos can prepare themselves for the sacrifices they have to make to achieve freedom. The opposing opinions of each side were presented discussed and analyzed in this chapter. The compromised version of Senator Jose P. Laurel on the version of the bill settled some disputes regarding the old proposed bill to the new one. Lastly, Part 3 answers the question of “Why the need to study the Rizal subject?” This part explains two specific reasons. First, because it is mandated by the law. Second, because of the lessons contained in the course. By applying the lessons behind the course in our daily lives, we are also playing an active role in nation-building. A large ranch or plantation, especially in a Spanish-speaking country SUMMARY In the political context, the 19th century was a period of massive changes in the world. Spain was slowly losing most of its colonies which became a period of colonial instability. As a result, the Filipino people suffered from the evils of oppressive colonial rule such as maladministration of justice, no equality before the law, racial prejudice, forced labor, frailocracy, and lack of representation in the Spanish Cortes. In the economic context, the technological innovations brought about by the Industrial Revolution paved the way for the invention of tools, ships, and other types of machinery. The opening of the Suez Canal brought trade, and countries closer to each other. Thus, it brought Spain closer to the Philippines. In the sociocultural context, the industrial revolution also paved the way for the rise of the middle class or principalias. being economically capable resulted in sending children to Europe to obtain Western education. The knowledge and exposure to PAMANTASAN NG CABUYAO | LIFE AND WORKS OF RIZAL 8 European ways, laws, and customs formed the ilustrados in Spain. In turn, these ilustrados organized the propaganda movement that initiated calls for reforms by exposing the deplorable condition of the Filipinos in the Philippines. The second part of this Chapter seeks to explain how the social, political, economic, and cultural events of the 19th century shaped Rizal to become a hero. First, Rizal is a product of the 19th century. We cannot seemingly imagine the 19th century Philippines without someone like Rizal on it. Next, Rizal responds to the needs of the time. He took an active role in the Propaganda Movement so that Spain could remedy all the tyrannies and injustices of its own colonial rule. Lastly, Rizal's idea of a Filipino nation would not be possible without the events of the 19th century. The independence, blessings of freedom, and democracy that we have today are the offshoot heroism Rizal did together with the Filipino people. Sa Aking Mga Kabata is the first poem that he wrote when he was just eight years old, hence; the content and message of the poem will give us an accurate insight as to the sentiments and aspirations of the young hero for his fellow youth. Traditionally, it is believed that in 1869, the then eight-year-old Jose Rizal wrote his first Tagalog poem entitled “Sa Aking mga Kabata (To My Childhood Companions).” The poem is most famous for this line: “ang hindi marunong magmahal sa sariling wika ay masahol pa sa hayop at malansang isda (he who loves not his own language is worse than a beast and a stinking fish).” However, in the book of Filipino historian, Ambeth Ocampo entitled Rizal Without the Overcoat, he claimed that Rizal did not write the said poem because of the many inconsistencies with the usage of certain letters and words that were not yet in use during the supposed year when the poem was written by the young Jose. Also, there is no documentary evidence that would confirm Rizal’s authorship to the iconic poem. Jose was the seventh of the eleven children of Don Francisco and Doña Teodora. Rizal affectionately called his father, “a model of fathers,” while he described his mother as “a woman of more than ordinary culture” for her excellence in literature and mathematics. The sibling relationship among the Rizal children was affectionately cordial. Although he had childish quarrels with his sisters, he always respected them. Meanwhile, Rizal’s relationship with his only brother Paciano was more than that of a younger to older brother. Paciano was a second father to him. Rizal even immortalized him in his first novel Noli Me Tangere as the wise Pilosopo Tasio (Zaide, 2008). PAMANTASAN NG CABUYAO | LIFE AND WORKS OF RIZAL 6 Group Activity Task: I.
