Through interdisciplinary and multimodal approaches, this course equips students with a broad knowledge of the practical, historical, philosophical and social relevance of the arts in order to hone students' ability to articulate their understanding of the arts. Learning Objectives At the end of this lesson, students are expected to: 1. identify the meaning of humanities, art, art appreciation, and art history; 2. differentiate art history from art appreciation; and 3. evaluate the relevance of art appreciation. It is taken from the Italian word “artis” which means craftsmanship, skill, mastery of form, inventiveness, and the associations that exist between form and ideas, between material and technique. The word art comes from the Aryan root word AR, meaning to join or put together. From AR, we can derive two Greek verbs, Artizein, which means to prepare, and Arkiskeins, which means to put together. The terms ARS means everything that is artificially made or composed by man. The term ART derives from the old Latin, which implies a “Craft or Specialized sort of expertise, as carpentry or surgery” (Collingwood, 1938) Art or “Sining” is defined the different manners of expressing human skills and imagination in the creation of aesthetics, conditions, object and presentation. Art is not confined only to what is seen. Art is man – made, not God – made. Art is creative, not imitative.
