The WHO (World Health Organisation), via the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, identifies health ‘as a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living’. Achieving optimal health and wellbeing allows: individuals, countries (nations) and the world (‘globally’) to benefit from all members being able to lead socially and economically productive lives. So what is OPTIMAL health and wellbeing? Optimal health and wellbeing: -Refers to a state when all five dimensions of health and wellbeing are as good as they can be. -Thus, it is the highest level of health and wellbeing an individual can realistically attain at a particular time. Optimal health and wellbeing is a resource that can be used to further promote the health and wellbeing of a nation. Being healthy can assist in creating a cycle of health and wellbeing through generations. For example: -If parents experience good health and wellbeing they are more likely to have an increased capacity to adequately care for and raise their children. -The children therefore are more likely to experience good health and wellbeing. -This means that future generations are more likely to be able to provide for themselves and their families and contribute to society which is a positive resource for the nation. Pandemics have significant impacts: high death rates, reduced work participation, loss of productivity, school closures, shut-down of non-essential goods, disruptions to travel and transport of goods (trade), breakdown of law and order …. Question 1 Sarah is a 17 year old student. She enjoys playing sport and is a talented netballer. On the weekend, Sarah broke her ankle and will be unable to play netball until the start of next season. Since her injury, Sarah has been feeling quite sad, which is not common for her. She will also miss out on two weeks of school as she requires surgery to assist in the healing of her ankle. Explain how returning to optimal health and wellbeing can act as a resource for Sarah. 3 marks Possible Answer: Three marks are awarded for explaining three points about ‘how returning to optimal health and wellbeing may act as a resource for Sarah’. TIPS: answer in the ‘positive’ / talk about Sarah! Possible Answer could be: When Sarah’s ankle is healed, she can continue to exercise which increases her fitness, promoting physical health and wellbeing (1 mark). She can also return to school and socialise with her friends, promoting her social health and wellbeing (1 mark). Once Sarah can return to playing netball, she may feel more connected to her team and club, enhancing her spiritual health and wellbeing (1 mark). This leads to the production of more resources (eg food, electronics) which can be traded with other countries, promoting income and thus the country’s economic development (1 mark). Where students were able to identify an example or impact of optimal health and wellbeing (e.g. having adequate levels of energy, experiencing low levels of stress and anxiety, being able to work productively or gain an education), they were generally able to outline how it could benefit a country (nation) as a resource. Students needed to ensure that the benefit related specifically to a country/nation and not merely an individual. The following is an example of a high-scoring response. Optimal health and wellbeing can mean people are free from disease and have optimal physical health and wellbeing. Thus, they are able to complete their education, get a job and therefore earn a taxable income. This taxation can then be used by the country’s government to fund resources such as infrastructure, education and healthcare thus acting as a national resource.
