SLEEP ACROSS THE LIFESPAN Chapter 6D DOT POINT 3 Differences in, and explanations for, the demands for sleep across the life span, with reference to total amount of sleep and changes in a typical pattern of sleep (proportion of REM and NREM) SLEEP ACROSS THE LIFESPAN People experience many changes in the way they sleep across the lifespan. These include: Sleep onset (at what time do we begin sleep) Sleep duration (total amount of sleep) Awakenings during sleep (how often we wake while sleeping) Proportion of REM sleep (% of time spent in REM) Proportion of NREM sleep (% of time spent in NREM) SLEEP PATTERNS ACROSS THE LIFESPAN TRENDS SEEN IN GRAPH The total amount of sleep decreases as a person ages (16 to 6 hours) The total amount of NREM sleep decreases as a person ages (8 hours to 4.5 hours) The total amount of REM sleep decreases as a person ages (8 hours to 1.5 hours) The percentage of REM sleep decreases as a person ages (50% to 20%) However: The percentage of NREM sleep increases as a person ages (50% to 80%) As a general rule, REM sleep helps to restore the mind (brain and cognitive development), while NREM sleep helps to restore the body (tissue and cells replacement) Therefore, increases REM sleep is evident in babies and people who are undergoing emotional stress People will spend more time in NREM sleep after physical exertion, such as after completing a marathon HIGHLIGHTING Read table 1, 2 and 3 p307 - 308 and highlight.
