Image Analysis: Notice & Wonder Instructions: Look at the image and write down 2-3 things you notice (key details, main ideas, themes) and then write down 2-3 things you wonder (questions you have because of the image, things you are curious about when you look at the image.) What do you notice? What do you wonder? Created with web.diffit.me Read & Take Notes Instructions: Read the passage below. Take notes in the space provided. Take Notes Here Place value is very important in mathematics. It helps us understand the value of each digit in a number. We use a place value chart to help us see this. The chart has a space for each digit in the number. These spaces are called ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on. The number 123 has a 1 in the hundreds place, a 2 in the tens place, and a 3 in the ones place. The 1 has a value of 100, the 2 has a value of 20, and the 3 has a value of 3. So, 123 is equal to 100 + 20 + 3. Place value can help us compare numbers. For example, the tens digit of the number 5,630 is 3. The hundreds digit of the number 356 is 3. The 3 in 5,630 represents 30, while the 3 in 356 represents 300. The 3 in 356 is greater than the 3 in 5,630. The place value system helps us understand how numbers work. It helps us perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It also helps us read and write numbers. We use the place value system every day when dealing with money, time, or measurements. We can use blocks to help us understand place value. One block can represent a one, a ten, a hundred, or even a thousand. We can use these blocks to build numbers and see the value of each digit. This can help us understand how numbers work and how to add and subtract them. Place value is a very important part of mathematics. It helps us understand how numbers work and how to use them. It helps us compare numbers, add and subtract numbers, and even read and write numbers. So, next time you see a number, think about its place value. It might help you understand it better! Created with web.diffit.me Answer and Explain Instructions: For each question, answer the question and then explain why you picked the answer you did using specific evidence from the text. Question: 1. What does the digit 3 represent in 356? Pick the Answer Explain: Why did you pick that answer? A) 3 ones B) 3 tens C) 3 hundreds D) 3 thousands Question: 2. When we move left on a place value chart, what happens to the value of the digit? Pick the Answer Explain: Why did you pick that answer? A) Value decreases B) Value stays the same C) Value increases D) Value changes randomly Question: 3. Why is 4,000 bigger than 600? Pick the Answer Explain: Why did you pick that answer? A) Because 4 is bigger than 6 B) Because 4,000 has more digits C) Because the 4 in 4,000 is in the thousands place D) Because 600 is a smaller number Created with web.diffit.me Short Answer Questions 1. What is the purpose of place value? Question 2. In the number 425,123, what is the value of the digit 2? Question 3. How does place value help us compare numbers?
