Philo of Religion John Carlo E. Sabal Repetitio: An Evolutionary Account of Religion by Daniel C. Dennet Religion is good for the world Brings out the best in a person The root of religion is the tendency to adding agency to complicated animate objects. The passage of beliefs from parents to children. (the role of elders) Repetitio: Religious leaders use the fear of God to get adherents to listen to them. (Evolution of Stewardship) People do not verify claims of religion and just go through the motion of professing belief. Religion is good for one’s health. Yet, it is not a good basis for Morality. Monotheism – one’s own god was the creator of heaven, of earth, and of all people. Pantheism – everything that exists has an inner nature that is one and the same in all things – God. The Attributes of God 1. Omnipotence The ability to do all things that are possible – absolute possibility. He can do all things that are in his power to do. (involving no contradiction in terms – absolute impossibility; logically impossible) “Whatever implies contradiction does not come within the scope of divine omnipotence, because it cannot have the aspect of possibility. Hence, it is more appropriate to sat that such things cannot be done, than that God cannot do them.” – St. Thomas Aquinas God can do anything that is an absolute possibility and not inconsistent with any of his basic attributes. 2. Omnibenevolent (Perfect Goodness) From the idea that God deserves unconditional gratitude, praise, and worship. (religious requirement) The being who is God cannot cease to be perfectly good. God’s perfect goodness involves both moral goodness (led a good life) and non moral goodness (had a good life). What God commands is morally right independent of his commands. Our knowledge of morality depends on his commands. 3. Self-Existence Existence is explained by another, explained by nothing, or its existence is explained by itself. God’s existence cannot be due to another (dependent to the other) or nothing (unintelligible). There is something about the nature of God that makes it exists. 4. Separation Rejects the notion of pantheism. Everything can be annihilated without changing the reality of divine being. God is separate from and independent of the world. There is a fundamental difference between the reality of God and the reality of the world. 5. Independent God is not governed by any of the physical laws according to which the universe operates. (law of space and law of time) The whole of one’s being cannot be divided and exist in many places, dimension, or moment. The whole beginningless and endless life of God is present at each moment of time and the whole of God is present at every place in space. 6. Eternal Either sense, (1) to have endless temporal existence, without beginning and without end; it has to have infinite duration in both temporal directions. (2) an eternal being does not have its life broken up into temporal parts, for it is not subject to the law of time. Otherwise, it would not be eternal. God is not subject to the fundamental law of time. How would you define the term God? If your definition of God is different from the theistic idea of God, explain the differences and give reasons why your idea of God might be a better one.
