When attention is paid to all various aspects of the self simultaneously it will work together in perfect harmony. Physical Health - Is defined as the condition of your body, taking into consideration everything from the absence of disease to fitness level. Physical Health can be affected by: Lifestyle: diet, level of physical activity, and behavior (eating unhealthy foods); Human Biology: a person’s genetics and physiology may make it easier or harder to achieve good physical health; Environment: our surroundings and exposure to factors such as sunlight or toxic substances; and Healthcare Service: good healthcare can help prevent illness, as well as to detect and treat illness. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Cognitive/Mental - The thinking process of a person Cognitive Development - Means how people think, explore, and figure things out. It is the development of knowledge, skills, problem-solving, and dispositions, which helps a person to think about and understand the world around them. Brain development is part of cognitive development. This aspect of the self is enhanced when one attends school to study and learn or engages in other mental endeavors. Psychological - A person’s way of thinking, feeling and behaving Emotional Development - Emotional health is an important part of overall health. Emotionally healthy people are in control of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Ways To Improve Emotional Health Be aware of your emotions and reactions. Notice what in your life makes you sad, frustrated, or angry. Try to address or change those things. Think before you act. Emotions can be powerful. Give yourself time to think, and be calm before you say or do something you might regret. Manage stress. Try to change situations, causing you stress. Learn relaxation methods to cope with stress. Strive for balance. Find a healthy balance between work and play and between activity and rest. Make time for things you enjoy. Focus on positive things in your life. Connect with others. We are social creatures. We need positive connections with other people. Social - The relationship a person has with other people. Social Development - Refers to how people develop social and emotional skills across the lifespan, with particular attention to childhood and adolescence. Healthy social development allows us to form positive relationships with family, friends, teachers, and other people in our lives. Healthy Social Development Can Help You: Develop Communication Skills. An ability to interact with others allows for more opportunities to practice communication skills. Build self-esteem. When a person is unable to make friends, it can be frustrating or even painful. A good circle of friends reinforces a person’s comfort level with her individuality. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Strengthen Learning Skills. Studies show that children who have a hard time getting along with classmates as early as a preschool are more likely to experience later academic difficulties. Resolve Conflicts. Stronger self-esteem and better language skills can ultimately lead to a better ability to resolve differences with peers. Establish a positive attitude. A positive attitude ultimately leads to better relationships with others and higher levels of self-confidence. Spiritual - The higher ideals, beliefs, and values a person adheres to which help guide the person in achieving personal happiness and self-fulfillment. Spiritual Development - Is defines as discovering oneself beyond the ego known as the soul, spirit, or the “inner essence” that is often disregarded or taken for granted (Llaneza-Ramos, 2017). It is when one experiences a glimpse of the “inner guide” of one’s beliefs and values as one discovers the meaning of life. The self-concept is represented by several aspects of the self. It is conceived as collection of multiple, context-dependent selves. Three basic but very different aspects of the self: 1. Physical or tangible aspects as they relate to the body. 2. Intellectual and conscious aspects as they relate to the mind. 3. Emotional and intuitive aspects as they relate to the spirit. All three aspects of the self work together in perfect harmony when attention is paid to all the three simultaneously. Many individuals put a strong emphasis in the physical aspects of the self. The body is tangible, obvious, and we respond to it easily. The body provides a place to house the spirit(often experienced as feelings) and the mind(often experienced as thought). EVALUATING ONE’S THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, AND BEHAVIOR Success is about right mindset, emotional resilience and proper behavior. Assessing one’s own development is incomplete without identifying one’s own goals in life. Development can be more purposeful if they are directed to the achievement of goals. Thoughts According to dictionary.com the product of mental activity; that which the capacity or faculty of thinking, reasoning, imagining; a consideration or reflection; meditation, contemplation, or recollection: one thinks PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Feelings Both emotional experiences and physical sensations – such as hunger or pain – bring about feelings, according to Psychology Today. Feelings are a conscious experience, although not every conscious experience, such as seeing or believing. Behavior In psychology, behavior consists of an organism’s external reactions to its environment. Other aspects of psychology, such as emotions, thoughts, and other internal mental processes, don’t usually fall under the category of behavior. Behavior may be modified One popular kind of counseling is called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). It is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all connected and influence one another. For example, if we are feeling sad or depressed, we might have thoughts like we are not worth much of anything, and we might do behaviors like stay in bed all day. On the other hand, if we are feeling happy or excited, we might have thoughts like the future is bright, and we might do behaviors like calling a friend or see a movie. The more you evaluate your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors the more information you can get about what thoughts and behaviors are associated with each of your feelings. Getting more information through evaluating your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors is the first step toward making a development/changes. A real winner is one who is able to: Win over his/her battles and difficulties in life and turns them into a learning and glorifying experience; Find meaning in pleasant and unpleasant events in his life; Discover and use his talents and abilities to the best advantage; Develop and use his talents and abilities to the best advantage and in so doing, make meaningful contribution in making this world a better place to live in. The secret of life, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times. There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure. When you want something the whole universe conspire in helping you achieve it. When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us become better too. Tell your heart that the fear or suffering is worse that the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and eternity. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES IN MIDDLE & LATE ADOLESCENCE Human Development Focuses on human growth and changes across the lifespan including physical, cognitive, social, intellectual, perceptual, personality and emotional growth. The study of human development is essential in understanding how humans learn, mature, and adapt. Throughout their lives, humans go through various stages of development. The human being is either in a state of growth or decline, but either condition imparts change. Developmental Stages 1. PRE-NATAL (Conception to birth) Age when hereditary endowments and sex are fixed and all body features, both external and internal are developed. 2. INFANCY (Birth to 2 years) Foundation when basic behavior are organized and many ontogenetic maturation skills are developed. 3. EARLY CHILDHOOD (2 to 6 years) Pre-gang age, exploratory, and questioning. Language and elementary reasoning are acquired and initial socialization is experienced. 4. LATE CHILDHOOD (6 to 12 years) Gang and creativity age when self-help skills, social skills, school skills, and play are developed. 5. ADOLESCENCE (puberty to 18 years) Transition age from childhood to adulthood when sex maturation and rapid physical development occur resulting to changes in ways of feeling, thinking and acting. 6. EARLY ADULTHOOD (18 to 40 years) Age of adjustment to new patterns of life and roles such as spouse, parent and bread winner. 7. MIDDLE AGE (40 years to retirement) Transition age when adjustments to initial, physical and mental decline are experienced. 8. OLD AGE (Retirement to death) Retirement age when increasingly rapid physical and mental decline are experienced. ADOLESCENCE Age Definitions of Adolescence Republic Act (RA) 10354, the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health (RPRH) Act of 2012 uses the term adolescents for people aged 10-19 years.
