Broken lines 7m in from each tryline 10m broken line on each side of the halfway line In goal area: beyond the try line Area between 7 metre broken line and try line is called the 7 metre zone Before starting the game: Refs check for any hazards on the field Refs check players for jewelry and footwear Moulds or running shoes are allowed NO BAREFEET Coin toss Done prematch by referees and both captains Winner gets choice of direction in first half, choice of interchange area, and choice of who starts Team composition: 6 players per team In mixed grades: team must have no more than 3 males on the field, and at least 1 at all times Substitutions: Players can come on and off the field whenever they like They must ensure that they don't have more than 6 players at a time, and must maintain the same gender ratio All substitute players stay in the interchange area Duration: 15-20 minute halves Match ends when full time expires or ball becomes dead Objective: to score tries by placing the ball on or over the attacking tryline Any player except the half can score A try is worth 1 point Match starts with tap in the middle of the halfway line After a try has been scored, the team who did not score will restart with a tap off at halfway After halftime, teams switch directions The team that didn't start will tap off for second hald Players can run with ball & pass to teammates NO FORWARD PASSES A team is entitled to 6 touches After 6th touch, TURNOVER A touch: Made either by a defender or by the player in possession. Contact with on the ball, hair, or clothing Players must use minimum force necessary to make a touch If players are touched at the same time they are grounding the ball for a try, the touch will count. A touch also counts if the ball is juggled in the air by the player. Referee needs to acknowledge all claimed touches If a player claims a touch but ref is unsure, the touch counts Touch is a sport based on honesty. Players should NOT claim a touch that missed If the ref is certain the player missed the touch they’ve claimed, the player will be sent to the sinbin for the false claim When a touch is affected, the player in possession must perform a rollball on the mark they were touched. They must be standing square, and place the ball on the ground in between the legs in a controlled manner. The half: The player who picks up the ball after its rolled The half can run with the ball, but if they are touched by a defender, or place the ball on/over the try line, a change in possession occurs If the ball is dropped to the ground/rollball performed incorrectly, there is a change in possession If the ball or a player in possession go out of play, change of possession. Play is restarted with roll ball, no less than 7 meters from sideline Defending players penalised if they cause a ruck interference or interfere with players performing the rollball. For a rollball to occur, the touch must be affected first. When roll ball happens prior to the touch, its called a voluntary roll ball,penalty is given to the non-offending team Touch and pass(penalty) Players cannot pass the ball after being touched. If the ball is in the passing motion before the touch is affected, play with continue and ref calls “play on” Off the mark (penalty) A player must perform a rollball on the mark(e.g. where they were touched). A penalty is awarded to the non offending team. Onside: At a roll ball, defending players must stay 7 meters (or to the defending tryline) to be onside. If roll ball is 8 meters out defense shall retire 1 metre from tryline to be onside. 7 metre zone: defending players cannot stay still on the try line. When the defending player enters the 7 metre zone, the defending team must move forward with reasonable pace until a touch is made Referees Responsible for adjudicating the rules of game during play Work as team to make decision and control match Refs use whistles signals and verbal cues to communicate w players Responsible for keeping score (scorecard) At the end of the match, the card is signed by both teams to confirm the score Extra time: Drop-off: teams drop to 4 players, 2 min extra time. If scores are still tied after 2min, teams drop to 3v3 for golden point (first to score wins)
