Forensic Entomology Forensic Entomology Insects can provide detailed information about time of death. Insects are so useful in crime investigation that there is an entire field dedicated to this study and practice called forensic entomology. A forensic entomologist observes and records data about the environmental conditions around a body. They collect insect evidence from on, above, and below the victim’s body and use their knowledge to predict TOD. Forensic Entomology Within minutes of a death, certain insects arrive to lay their eggs on the warm body—blowflies. As the corpse decomposes, other kinds of insects arrive: blowflies, beetles, yellow jackets, coffin flies, etc. When insects are found on a body, the current “stage” of the insect’s life cycle can be a clue to TOD. There are 6 stages: Eggs, Instar I, Instar II, Instar III, Pupa, Adult Blowfly Complete the Blowfly Life Cycle Table Forensic Entomology 1.
