Encourage them to observe and talk about different types of plants. ## Parts of a plant A plant has many parts. Each part is important for the plant. * **Flower** * **Leaf** * **Fruit** * **Stem** * **Roots** ## Plants grow from seeds Most plants grow from seeds. A seed has a baby plant inside it. When the seed gets air, water and warmth, the baby plant comes out. The baby plant slowly grows into a big plant. * **Seed** * **Baby plant comes out** * **Baby plant grows** * **Big plant** ## Types of plants Plants are of different shapes and sizes. Some grow tall. Some stay short. ### Trees Most big and tall plants have thick and hard stems. The main stem is called the **trunk**. The other thin stems are called **branches**. These plants are called **trees**. Most trees live for many years. For example, a banyan tree can live for hundreds of years. * **Pine** * **Neem** * **Banyan** Big and tall plants are called trees. ## Shrubs Shrubs are plants that do not grow tall. They do not have a trunk. However, they have short, woody branches. Like trees, shrubs live for many years. * **Rose** * **Cotton** * **Mehndi** Shrubs have short, woody branches. ## Herbs Some plants are very small. They have soft, green stems. These plants are called **herbs**. Most herbs live just for a few months. * **Mint** * **Coriander** Herbs have soft, green stems. ## Climbers Some plants have weak stems. They cannot grow straight on their own. They need the support of other plants, sticks or wire nets. These plants are called **climbers**. * **Pea** * **Bean** * **Pumpkin** * **Watermelon** Climbers cannot grow straight on their own. ## Creepers Some plants with weak stems grow along the ground. These plants are called **creepers**. Creepers grow along the ground. ## At a Glance * A plant has many parts. (common nouns) ### A. Complete the table using words that name these. | People | Places | Animals | Things | Birds | |---|---|---|---|---| | boy | library | lion | pencil | parrot | | | garden | cat | box | crow | Look at the words in the table. They are names of people, places, animals, birds and things in general. We call such general naming words **common nouns**. (proper nouns) ### B. Now complete the table using special naming words. | Persons | Places | Days | |---|---|---| | Pavan | Hyderabad | Friday | | | Amritsar | Sunday | The naming words that have been given as answers are nouns that stand for a particular or specific person (Pavan), place (Amritsar) or day (Sunday). Such nouns are called proper nouns. Remember that a proper noun always starts with a capital letter. ## Using Words (occupations) Read what these people are saying. Then say what they do. Unscramble the letters. Now work in pairs and check each other's answers. 1. I teach children. **Teacher** (rthaeec). 2. I catch thieves. I am a **Policeman** (anicemolp). 3. I look after sick people in a hospital. I am a **Nurse** (usner). 4. I fly planes. I am a **Pilot** (otipl). 5. I write books. I am a **Writer** (eitrwr). ## Dictionary Work (alphabetical order). Alphabetical order is the order in which the letters from a to z occur. In the dictionary, all words beginning with the letter a come first, followed by b, then c and so on. ## Assessment of Speaking and Listening ### Listening (listening for details) Listen to the riddles and complete them.
