PDCA (Plan – Do – Check (Study) – Act) ISO INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR STANDARDIZATION Uses and applications of PDCA cycle Asa model for continuous improvement. When starting a new improvement project. When developing a new or improved design of a process, product, or service. For implementing any change. 2 Procedure When an improvement to a process is desired, the PDCA cycle can be applied, many times, until we get the desired and expected results. 1. Plan: Recognize an opportunity and plan a change. The first step may be examining and analyzing existing data before planning a change. 3 2. Do: Test the change. Carry out small scale study. 3. Study (Check): Review the test, analyze the results, and identify what you have learned. 4. Act: Take an action based on what you learned in the study step. If the change did not work, go through the cycle again with a different plan. 4 ISO International Organization for Standardization European Community commissioned the International Organization for Standardization (IOS) in Geneva to write a set on non- binding quality standards that companies could use to evaluate the quality management systems of potential suppliers 6 Over eight years, the organization wrote the ISO 9000 series of standards that the EU accepted as single quality standards to be adopted by all member countries. ISO 9000 was released in 1987 IOS became ISO. 7 The Meaning of 9001 in ISO 9001 The 9001 is the identification number of the standard. Every document published by the International Organization for Standardization has a unique number assigned to it so that it can be easily located by anyone who needs it. It is important that no two documents share the same number. ISO 9001 is followed by a revision number that shows the most recent version. ISO 9001:2015 is the most current version of the standard. 8 Requirements in ISO 9001 A set of procedures that cover all key processes in the business. Monitoring processes to ensure they are effective. Keeping adequate records. 9 Checking output for defects, with appropriate and corrective action where necessary. Regularly reviewing individual processes and the quality system itself for effectiveness. Facilitating continual improvement. 10 Certification: ISO does not itself certify organizations. Many countries have formed accreditation bodies to authorize certification bodies, which audit organizations applying for ISO 9001 compliance certification. 11 An ISO certificate is not a once- and-for-all award, but must be renewed at regular intervals recommended by the certification body, usually around three years. There are no grades of competence within ISO 9001: either a company is certified (meaning that it is committed to the method and model of quality management described in the standard), or it is not. 12 A company or organization that has been independently audited and certified to be in conformance with ISO 9001 may publicly state that it is "ISO 9001 certified" or "ISO 9001 registered". https://www.cabem.com/top- 10-most-popular-iso- standards/ 13 ISO Seal Advantages Implementing ISO often gives the following advantages: 1. Create a more efficient, effective operation. 2. Increase customer satisfaction and retention. 3. Reduce audits. 4. Enhance marketing. 15 5. Improve employee motivation, awareness, and morale. 6. Promote international trade. 7. Increases profit. 8. Reduce waste and increases productivity. 16 Disadvantages ISO 9001 registration requires: A lot of money. A lot of time. A lot of paper work. 17
