Principles of Biology I Final Exam Review Test details: 64 MC, 3 T/F, and 8 matching. Each answer is worth 2 points for a total of 150 points. This is weighted at 15% of your grade. Additional instructions: It is always beneficial to review previous unit exam reviews given to you and any of your content notes. This list is not considered comprehensive but does give insight on the big topics of the final exam. According to OC policy, you cannot take your final exam at a different time unless you have approval given by the university. DO NOT SHOW UP LATE. The door closes when the exam begins. No exceptions. A few things to focus on: - Cell parts and their functions (nucleus, smooth ER, rough ER, ribosomes, golgi, etc) - What organelles are in plants vs animals and which ones are lacking for each - Know the difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes (different cell parts/structures - Types of bonds (hydrogen, covalent, ionic, polar) - How to read the periodic table - What happens to an element that gains/loses neutrons, protons, and/or electrons - What is the backbone of organic molecules? - Inheritance patterns (codominance, incomplete dominance, sex-linked etc) - What occurs in interphase, mitosis, meiosis I and II, and cytokinesis - Cellular respiration: where each step takes place in the cell, what is occurring, why, equation - Photosynthesis: where each step takes place in the cell, what is occurring, why, equation - Reading a codon table - Genetics questions very similar to test \#4 (understanding recessive vs dominant, genotype ratios, phenotype ratios) - What do humans store energy as? What about plants? - If a plant is one color, what is happening to the wavelengths of light? (what colors are reflected, what is absorbed?) - Hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic solutions and how they affect plant and animal cells - Domains: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya - Moving up pH changes H+ concentration by how much (acid vs base pH - What element saturates fats? Know a little about their bonds. - What is the final electron acceptor of aerobic respiration? - Roles of mRNA vs tRNA - General description of transcription and translation and RNA vs DNA facts - Fermentation - Aerobic, and anaerobic metabolic pathways - How to correctly write a hypothesis, primary vs secondary literature - Additional terms to understand: enzymes, amino acids, proteins, monosaccharides, lipids, nucleic acids, histones, heterotrophs, autotrophs, entropy, isotopes, solution vs solvent vs solute, hydrolysis, anabolic, catabolic, hydrophilic, hydrophobic
