Geography and Tourism Introduction to the Geography of Tourism - Geography and tourism What is tourism geography? Tourism geography is that branch of human geography that deals with the study of travel and its impact on places. It studies travel and tourism, as an industry and as a social and cultural activity. Tourism geography began to emerge more consistently in academic journals in the second half of the 20th century, with a focus on what Pearce (1979) calls the major areas of interest: spatial patterns, geography of resorts, movements and flows, tourism impacts and tourist space models. Tourism geography research has mainly focused on the how, why and where. Inês Boavida-Portugal, 2022, Future land use/cover change and tourism development: integrating land use policy and tourist decision behavior in Mapping and Forecasting Land Use. Introduction to the Geography of Tourism - Geography and tourism What is tourism geography? Tourism geography is concerned with the space, place, and environmental dimensions of tourism. A.M. Williams, G. Shaw, 2001, Geography of Tourism, in International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences. Geography is fundamental to the study of tourism, because tourism is geographical in nature. Tourism occurs in places, it involves movement and activities between places. It is an activity in which both place characteristics and personal self- identities are formed, through the relationships that are created among places, landscapes and people. Introduction to the Geography of Tourism - Geography and tourism What is tourism geography? Tourism geography is the study of tourism within the concepts, frames, orientations, and venues of the discipline of geography and accompanying fields of geographical knowledge. The notion of tourism geographies describes the multiple, and sometimes contested, theoretical, philosophical and personal orientations of those who undertake tourism research from geographical perspectives. Hall, Michael, 2013, Framing Tourism Geography: Notes From The Underground. Annals of Tourism Research Introduction to the Geography of Tourism - Geography and tourism What is tourism geography? Butler (2004) suggests three distinct eras of development of Tourism Geography: Pre-1950: The descriptive ear. Only descriptive analysis of torism activities. 1950 to 1980: The thematic era. Issues such as the effect of scale, spatial distribution of tourism phenomenon and of tourist movement, people-land relationships and tourism impact, and the spatial modelling of tourism development were typical foci for geographical work which established a basic approach to tourism geography that remained influential into the 1990s. 1980- present: The era of diversity. The scale of tourism has grown and become more diverse in its composition. The new areas include: torism and communities, tourism and capitalist political economies, tourism production, consumption and new economic geography; cultural changes and new cultural readings of tourism; tourism as an agent of urban regeneration and place promotion; and tourism as a sustainable form of development.
