NUTRITION What is Nutrition? Nutrition is the supply of materials – food- required by organisms and cells to stay alive. In science and human medicine, nutrition is the science or practice of consuming and utilizing foods. Nutritional science studies how the body breaks food down (catabolism) and how it repairs and creates cells and tissue (anabolism). Catabolism and anabolism combined can also be referred to as metabolism. (Australian Government DOH, “Nutrients,” 2013) Essential Nutrients Carbohydrates are essential macronutrients consisting of carbon (C) , hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) atoms found in certain kinds of food, that provide you with energy. Essential Nutrients Fat are nutrients that give you energy. Fats have a 9 calories in each gram. Fats help in the absorption of fat- soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Essential Nutrients Proteins are any of various naturally occurring extremely complex substances that consist of amino-acid residues joined by peptide bonds, contain the elements carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, usually sulfur, and occasionally other elements (such as phosphorus or iron), and include many essential biological compounds (such as enzymes, hormones, or antibodies. (Merriam-Webster, “Proteins”) Essential Nutrients Vitamins are substances that you need in order to remain healthy , which are found in food or can be eaten in the form of pills. (Collins English Dictionary, “Vitamin” Essential Nutrients Minerals are those elements on the earth and in foods that our bodies need to develop and function normally. Those essential for health include calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chloride, magnesium, iron, zinc, iodine, chromium, copper, fluoride, molybdenum, manganese, and selenium. Essential Nutrients Water is a nutrient all its own, helping every cell on your body function properly. Most people get about 20 percent of their water through food and the rest by drinking water or other beverages. To meet Institute of Medicine water-intake recommendations, men should drink about 13 cups of non alcoholic fluids per day, while women should drink about 9 cups of water per day.
