Bronchoconstriction → r/t hyperresponsiveness of airways 2. Hypersecretion of mucus in bronchial tree CLINICAL SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS 3. Mucosal edema Episodes of coughing (At night, early morning) Wheezing CLASSIFICATIONS Dyspnea 1. EXTRINSIC ASTHMA: Hypersensitivity to inhalant allergen; Chest tightness mediated by IgE Breathlessness (DOB/SOB) 2. INTRINSIC ASTHMA: No inciting allergen; environmental stimuli/infection (viral) SEVERE CASES: 3. MIXED ASTHMA Diaphoresis Tachycardia OTHER CLASSIFICATIONS: Hypoxemia Aspirin-induces Central cyanosis Exercise-induced COMPLICATIONS Occupational asthma STATUS ASTHMATICUS - severe life-threatening persistent CLASSIFICATIONS (SEVERITY) asthma that does not respond to conventional therapy; 1. MILD INTERMITTENT attacks last longer than 24 hours ≤2 days/week ○ Fibrosis (rigidity) of the airways ≤2 nights/month ○ Death 2. MILD PERSISTENT DIAGNOSTICS ≥ 2 day/week, but 2 nights/month PULMONARY FUNCTION TEST (PFT): increase in FEV, PF 3.
