Osteoporosis Osteoporosis Osteoporosis By: Ellary Osteoporosis By: Ellary What is Osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a bone disease that develops when bone mineral density and bone mass decreases, or when the structure and the strength of a bone changes. What are the symptoms? Back pain like a fractured or collapsed vertebra Loss of height over time or a stooped posture Bone fractures that start occurring more often or more easily than expected. Prognosis You’ll have it for a long time, usually the rest of your life. You will need to go in for regular appointments to do a bone density test, adjust treatments as needed, and you will get specific diet and exercise plan. What are the causes? Age: because once you are +30 your bone mass naturally decreases, and rebuilding slows down. Genetics: increase you risk of getting osteoporosis if it’s common in your family. Hormonal changes: menopause causes estrogen to drop which protects bones, and men's testosterone reduces in age which also protects bones. Medical conditions and medications: Medical condition like rheumatoid arthritis and long- term use of steroids. Poor diet or drinking alcohol: diets lacking calcium and vitamin D can lead to weaker bones. Treatments You will have to take certain vitamins and supplements like calcium and vitamin D, also specific medications for yourself, and exercises.
