Operating Systems BTA3O Success Criteria I will be successful when I can………….. ▪ Explain what an operating system is ▪ Label the desktop features of a variety of operating systems ▪ Compare the Linux OS with the more common Windows and Mac OS What is an Operating System? ▪ An operating system is the software that makes your computer work. ▪ It talks to all systems and external hardware, loads programs into memory, connects to the internet, and manages storage on disks. ▪ An operating system also includes tools to keep your computer running smoothly, safely, and malware-free. ▪ Much of an operating system's security and stability is maintained by an automated update process that makes sure the system receives timely fixes to hardware and software. ▪ The most common are Windows, Mac OS. Some less common are Chrome OS and Linux. Complete the handout Questions – Operating Systems using the links provided on the Google Classroom LINUX Operating Systems What is Linux? ▪ Linux is similar to other operating systems you may have used before, such as Windows, macOS (formerly OS X), or iOS. ▪ Like other operating systems, Linux has a graphical interface, and the same types of software you are accustomed to, such as word processors, photo editors, video editors, and so on. ▪ Linux also is different from other operating systems in many important ways. – Linux is open source software. The code used to create Linux is free and available to the public to view, edit, and—for users with the appropriate skills— to contribute to. Advantages of Linux ▪ Linux is a highly secure operating system. Your security and privacy are put first before anything else in Linux. ▪ Although Linux systems get bugs that are hard to troubleshoot and solve, they are rare. ▪ It is free to download, use and share in any way you want. – You can contribute to the Linux system and review the code and any functionality yourself. ▪ You need not have much space on your system to run Linux. Even 10 GB is enough to run any Linux distribution properly. Disadvantages of Linux ▪ Many big developers don’t even bother publishing their software on Linux because of its small market share. ▪ For Windows users and users with less technical experience, learning Linux is hard. ▪ It is also hard to find someone to help you with your Linux problems. ▪ Popular video games run on Window’s Direct X technology which is not available for Linux. Hence, Linux misses out on many games Complete the handout Questions – Operating Systems (Linux) using the YouTube video provided on the Google Classroom. When done watch the rest of the video. Create Your Own OS Desktop Use a photo editing software of your choice and create a desktop for your own unique OS. Give your operating system a name and describe three key features within the desktop that differentiate it from Windows, Mac and Linux. Save your desktop as an image file and briefly describe what make it unique. Both the image and description can be added to the Activity – Create Your Own OS Desktop document on Google Classroom.
