Biden had delegated the secretary of state “to direct the drawdown of up to $567 million in defense articles and services of the Department of Defense, and military education and training, to provide assistance to Taiwan”. In April, Biden signed a hard-fought bill into law that provides billions of dollars of new U.S. aid to Ukraine for its war with Russia, as well as for Israel and Taiwan. Taiwan ❖ Capital: Taipei City ❖ Currency: New Taiwan dollar ❖ President: William Lai Ching-te India Joins Leadership of Global Anti-Corruption Alliance India has been elected to the fifteen-member Global Operational Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities (GLobE) Steering Committee during the plenary session held in Beijing. The GloBE Network is an initiative of the G20 group. India had supported the initiative in 2020. The GloBE Network now has 121 member countries. The Ministry of Home Affairs is the central authority for the GLoBE Network from India. NATO to set up new commands in Finland The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) will set up a new land command in Finland near the Russian border in 2025, tasked with overseeing the alliance’s land force operations in northern Europe in the event of a military conflict. Finland, which joined NATO in 2023 in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, is organising the alliance’s presence on its territory. The command will work with Finland's army and NATO's U.S.-based Norfolk Joint Force Command, with an initial budget of €8.5 million. North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO): ❖ Established: 1949 Headquarters: Brussels, Belgium ❖ Member Countries: 32 G7 aims to finalise $50 Billion loan for Ukraine by end of October European Commission has said that the Group of Seven (G7) countries want to reach a political agreement on the 50 billion dollar loan for Ukraine by the end of this month for the cash to be able to available before the end of this year. The loan for Ukraine is to be serviced from profits generated by immobilized Russian assets in the West. More than two-thirds of the assets, some 210 billion euros, are in the EU. The G7 countries are the United States, Canada, Japan, Britain, France, Germany and Italy. The European Union as a whole, represented by its institutions, is also part of the group. 2 WETEX 2024 Begins in Dubai The 26th Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) 2024 began at the Dubai World Trade Centre, (1 - 3 Oct 2024) 29 leading companies participating in the Indian pavilion. The event, organized by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) showcasing cutting-edge innovations in renewable energy, water treatment, and environmental technologies. World Green Economy Forum Launched in Dubai: The World Green Economy Forum was launched in Dubai, bringing together global leaders and experts to address pressing environmental challenges. Under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, the forum’s theme, “Empowering Global Action: Unlocking Opportunities and Advancing Progress,” set the stage for discussions on international cooperation and innovative solutions for climate change and sustainability. Union Minister Piyush Goyal & US Commerce Secretary Co-Chair India-US CEO Forum: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, and US Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo jointly chaired the India-U.S. CEO Forum held in Washington D.C., USA. The India-U.S. CEO Forum convened as a platform to allow private sector members to develop and provide recommendations to the Indian and US governments. These recommendations reflect the private sector’s views, concerns and suggestions about the creation of an environment in which the bilateral economic links are strengthened. The Forum works in tandem with and provides inputs to, the government-to-government U.S.-India Commercial Dialogue. UK Agrees to Transfer Chagos Islands Sovereignty to Mauritius: The United Kingdom and Mauritius reached an historical agreement to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, a strategically significant archipelago in the Indian Ocean to hand over to Mauritius. The agreement allows Mauritius to regain sovereignty while ensuring the continued operation of the U.S. military base on Diego Garcia. It makes policy recommendations to the US President, Secretary of State, and Congress and tracks the implementation of these recommendations. It also recommended to declare India a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) in the context of religious freedom. External Affairs Minister Jaishankar to go to Pakistan for SCO meet In the first such visit in nearly a decade, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will travel to Islamabad to attend the Heads of Government (HoG) meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on October 15 and 16. The Ministry of External Affairs said that Mr. Jaishankar’s visit was “mainly” for the SCO grouping’s meeting, given India’s focus on “regional cooperation mechanisms”. The tool is designed to facilitate the integration of health workforce planning into labour market analysis. The WHO developed the HLMA Guidebook in 2021 and trained 75 experts from 25 countries in Africa. World Health Organization(WHO): ❖ Established in 1948 Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland Sri Lanka secures $200 million from World Bank under Development Policy Financing Program Sri Lanka, under its Development Policy Financing Program, has secured a 200 Million US Dollars package from the International Development Association of the World Bank Group. The agreement was signed between Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Finance, and the World Bank officials in the presence of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. This financing is part of the World Bank’s continued commitment to assist Sri Lanka in its comprehensive reform agenda. The DPF program is part of the second phase of Sri Lanka’s Resilience, Stability, and Economic Turnaround or RESET programme, which operates in tandem with the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility. Sri Lanka: President: Anura Kumara Dissanayake Prime Minister: Dr Harini Amarasuriya 4 India’s health system embraces ‘whole of govt & society’ approach to achieve UHC Union Health Minister, Jagat Prakash Nadda said that “India’s health system embraces a “whole of government” and “whole of society” approach to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC), with emphasis on strengthening primary healthcare and essential services.” Addressing the 77th session of the World Health Organization(WHO) Southeast Asia Region. The Minister said that the government’s Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana has covered over 120 million families and provided an annual hospitalization benefit of 6,000 dollars per family. Mr Nadda has also been elected as the Chairperson Of the 77th Session of the WHO South East Asia Regional Committee. Milton increases to a Category 2 hurricane as Florida prepares for massive evacuations Florida prepared for its largest evacuation since 2017. Hurricane Milton was strengthening over the southern Gulf of Mexico as storm surge and hurricane watches for parts of Florida and a hurricane warning for the Mexican coast were issued. In a joint press statement after holding delegation-level talks with the President of Maldives Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Prime Minister Modi said India has always fulfilled its responsibility of a neighbour. It fulfilling the need of essential commodities for the people of Maldives, making drinking water available during natural calamities, or providing vaccines to that country during COVID-19 times. Maldives also has an important place in our “Neighbourhood First” policy and “SAGAR” Vision. India, Nepal sign B2B Framework Agreement to develop petroleum infrastructure Nepal and India have reached the B2B Framework Agreement regarding the development of petroleum infrastructure in Nepal. Recently, Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) inked a Business to Business (B2B) Framework Agreement in New Delhi in which the Executive Director of Nepal Oil Corporation, Dr Chandika Prasad Bhatta and Director of Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Senthil Kumar, signed the Agreement in presence of Pankaj Jain, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoP&NG), Government of India and V. Satish Kumar, Chairman, Indian Oil. 5 UAE Launches Nationwide Campaign “The UAE Stands with Lebanon” to Support Lebanese People The United Arab Emirates has launched a nationwide campaign to support the people of Lebanon. The campaign, titled “The UAE Stands with Lebanon,” will run from October 8 to 21, 2024. It aims to mobilize the entire UAE community, including individuals, institutions, and both public and private sector organizations, in a collective effort to provide aid to Lebanon. The aid distribution is being coordinated with international partners, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. India and Maldives Boost Ties with $750 Million Currency Swap Deal India has extended significant financial aid to the Maldives by signing a $750 million currency swap agreement to ease the country’s foreign exchange crisis. This includes a $400 million swap and an additional ₹3,000 crore ($357 million) under the SAARC Currency Swap Framework, available until 2027. The agreement was sealed during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, who is on a five-day visit to India. Both leaders discussed key economic and security collaborations, adopting a “vision statement” that reinforces their partnership. State of Global Water Resource Report 2023 It is an annual report published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) since 2021. It offers a comprehensive and consistent overview of water resources worldwide. It is based on input from dozens of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services and other organizations and experts. Highlights of the 2023 Report: ❖ The year 2023 marked the driest year for global rivers in 33 years. ❖ The last five consecutive years have recorded widespread below-normal conditions for river flows, with reservoir inflows following a similar pattern. Brazil’s forest fires devastate over 22 million hectares Large areas of Brazil’s forest were affected by fires, with 22.38 million hectares devastated in the first nine months of this year. The fires consumed 10.65 million hectares in September alone. Mato Grosso, Para and Tocantins in the northern region have been the worst hit. The Amazon region has been the most affected by fire, with 11.3 million hectares burned. President Droupadi Murmu to embark on three nation visit to Algeria, Mauritania and Malawi President Droupadi Murmu will visit Algeria, Mauritania, and Malawi from October 15 to 19, marking the first visit by an Indian president to these nations. 6 The visit follows the African Union's inclusion as a permanent member of the G20 during India’s presidency. In Algeria (October 15), she will meet President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and address the India-Algeria Economic Forum. In Mauritania (October 16), she will hold talks with President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani and engage with the Indian diaspora. In Malawi (October 17-19), she will meet with local leadership and trade leaders to enhance India- Africa relations. India becomes 3rd largest supplier of health & nutrition support to UNICEF The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has said that Indian suppliers are the third largest provider of organisation’s health and nutrition support to children globally. Indian businesses have supplied goods and services worth nearly six billion dollars to UNICEF for its global work. UNICEF’s supply division Director, Leila Pakkala, who was on her first official visit to India, said that Indian suppliers of life-saving goods and services for children are key to UNICEF’s work for children globally. She also mentioned that UNICEF values these contributions which are central to its mission of saving the lives of the most vulnerable children not only in India but around the world. India Becomes Russia's No. 2 Supplier of Restricted Technology India is exceeded only by China. Indian exports of restricted critical items such as microchips, circuits and machine tools surpassed $60 million in both April and May, about double from earlier months this year, and leaped to $95 million in July. India & Colombia to sign Audiovisual Co-Production Agreement The Audiovisual Co-production Agreement between India and Colombia will be signed in New Delhi. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan will be the signatories representative of India and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Jorge Enrique Rojas Rodriguez will be the signatories representing his country. This agreement is expected to benefit producers from both countries in pooling their creative, artistic, technical, financial and marketing resources for the co-production. India has co-production treaties with 16 countries, resulting in 29 projects over the last five years. Colombia is the 17th country with which India is signing a Co-Production Agreement. Colombia: ❖ Capital: Bogotá ❖ Currency: Colombian peso ❖ President: Gustavo Petro 7 India-Canada row Highlights: Centre rejects Canadian PM Trudeau’s charges India has slammed Canada for claiming that its High Commissioner and other officials were “persons of interest” in the investigation of the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar (Canadian Citizen since 2007). India then proceeded to withdraw its High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma and other senior diplomats stationed in Canada This was followed by the expulsion of six Canadian diplomats, including the acting High Commissioner (Charge de Affaires) Stewart Ross Wheeler. Canada accused India of making a “fundamental error,” Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Foreign Minister Melanie Joly India-US to finalise Rs 32,000 crore predator drone and MRO facility deal India and the United States are set to sign a Rs 32,000 crore deal for the acquisition of 31 predator drones, along with the establishment of a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility in India. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) gave its approval for procurement 15 of the drones will be assigned to the Indian Navy, while the remaining 16 will be distributed equally between the Indian Army and Air Force. Predator drones at four locations: INS Rajali near Chennai, Porbandar in Gujarat, and Sarsawa and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, addressed 23rd meeting of SCO Council of Heads of Government in Islamabad, Pakistan Dr. Jaishankar called for combating terrorism, separatism and extremism for a closer cooperation on trade and economy. Earlier, Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif opened the SCO Summit 2024, calling for expanding China’s ambitious programme, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), massively promoted by China’s President Xi Jinping. The SCO is a 10-member nation for security and multilateral cooperation dialogues. China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus are its permanent members of the SCO, which also has 16 other countries affiliated as observers or “dialogue partners”. Founded in 2001by Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. The first summit was held in Shanghai, China, in 2001. The official working language of the SCO Secretariat is Russian and Chinese. In 2017: Astana, India and Pakistan officially joined SCO as full members First ASEAN-India Track 1 Cyber Policy Dialogue Held in Singapore The First ASEAN-India Track 1 Cyber Policy Dialogue was held in Singapore. The Dialogue was co-chaired by Joint Secretary, Cyber Diplomacy Division, Ministry of External Affairs, Amit A. Shukla. 8 During the Dialogue, both sides exchanged views on cyber threat landscape, national cyber policies, threat assessment, and the recent developments in the ICT domain at the United Nations. The Dialogue explored cooperation in capacity building and training to identify specific areas of activities. It contributed to strengthening ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership through implementation of ASEAN-India Joint Statement on Advancing Digital Transformation issued during the ASEAN – India Summit on 10th of this month. 75th International Astronautical Congress begins in Milan with focus on responsible space for sustainability The 75th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) opened at the MiCo Convention Center in Milan, Italy. The event has drawn more than 10,000 space experts, scholars, entrepreneurs, and professionals from around the world. Italian President Sergio Mattarella attended the opening ceremony. This year’s congress, themed “Responsible Space for Sustainability,” focuses on promoting the sustainable development of space technologies globally, ensuring that future space exploration and utilization strike a balance between scientific advancement and environmental protection. The Seventh Session of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly was hosted in New Delhi. It is the apex decision-making body of International Solar Alliance (ISA), representing each Member Country. This body makes decisions concerning the implementation of the ISA’s Framework Agreement and coordinated actions to be taken to achieve its objective. Functions: The Assembly deliberates matters of substance, such as the selection of the Director General, the functioning of ISA, approval of the operating budget, etc. It meets annually at the ministerial level at the ISA’s seat. India Sends Haemodialysis Machines to Papua New Guinea and Medical Supplies to Lebanon India is providing 33 tonnes of medical supplies to Lebanon, with an initial shipment of 11 tonnes that includes a variety of pharmaceutical products such as cardiovascular medications, NSAIDs, antibiotics, and anesthetics. The shipment underscores India’s commitment to humanitarian assistance and enhances its role in global health support. Separately, India dispatched 12 haemodialysis machines with portable RO units to Papua New Guinea, fulfilling a commitment made during the FIPIC III Summit (Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation). This assistance aims to strengthen the healthcare system in Papua New Guinea, highlighting India's proactive engagement in improving health infrastructure in developing countries. 9 India Grants ₹487 Crore Under Its First-Ever Rupee-Denominated Line of Credit to Mauritius India has extended a ₹487.60 crore line of credit to Mauritius, marking the first rupee- denominated loan under the Indian Development and Economic Assistance Scheme (IDEAS). The loan, approved by the Mauritian government, will be used to replace approximately 100 km of obsolete water pipelines in Mauritius. The funding will be provided through the State Bank of India (SBI). The IDEAS program offers concessional loans to developing countries, requiring them to source at least 75% of goods/services from India for funded projects. During her visit, she held a bilateral meeting with Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera and signed four MoUs for cooperation in sports, youth matters, pharmaceuticals, and art and culture. India committed to providing 1,000 metric tonnes of rice and a Bhabhatron cancer treatment machine to Malawi and announced the establishment of a permanent artificial limb replacement center. The President will visit the Sree Radha Krishna temple and Lake Malawi before returning to New Delhi after her week-long trip to Algeria, Mauritania, and Malawi. Bhutan and India Discuss Strengthening Hydropower Cooperation Bhutan’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister, Lyonpo Gem Tshering, met with India’s Power Minister Manohar Lal in New Delhi to discuss strengthening cooperation in the hydropower sector. The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration on the Puna-1 Hydroelectric Power (HEP) Project, with India reaffirming its commitment to hydropower development in Bhutan. Both nations share a strong partnership in hydropower, with key projects benefiting Bhutan's economy and providing renewable energy to India, marking progress in bilateral relations and regional energy security. India doubles grant to support education in Sri Lanka's plantation community India has doubled its grant to ₹172.25 million to support education in Sri Lanka’s plantation areas for the Indian-origin Tamil community. Thilaka Jayasundara has signed and exchanged diplomatic letters to formalise the modalities. 10 Tata, Somerville College Oxford to build new facility in honour of Ratan The Tata Group and Somerville College, University of Oxford, are partnering to build the Ratan Tata Building, with construction set to commence in spring 2025. The new building will enhance Somerville's teaching and learning facilities, promote research, and embody the college's vision of a sustainable and progressive academic community. Cyclone Named By Qatar Will Hit Odisha, Bengal. What "Dana" Means In Arabic Odisha and West Bengal are bracing for the impact of Cyclone Dana, which is expected to make landfall between Puri and Sagar Island on the intervening night of October 24 and October 25. 'Dana' is likely to cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting 120 kmph. Cyclone Dana has also forced the Odisha government to shut schools and ask fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea on October 24. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Odisha will witness heavy rainfall between October 23 and October 25. Egypt was officially declared ‘malaria-free’ by the World Health Organization It is an acute febrile illness caused by Plasmodium parasites, which are spread to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is a life-threatening disease primarily found in tropical countries. Transmission: It is not contagious and cannot spread from one person to another; the disease is transmitted through the bites of female Anopheles mosquitoes. Symptoms: The first symptoms of malaria usually begin within 10–15 days after the bite from an infected mosquito. Fever, headache and chills are typically experienced, though these symptoms may be mild and difficult to recognize as malaria. Prevention: Vector control interventions: Vector control is the main approach to prevent malaria and reduce transmission. Treatment: It is preventable and curable BRICS Summit 2024 Highlights PM Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit and agreed to work towards a “peaceful and stable” relationship by displaying maturity and mutual respect. They also highlighted the need to not allow differences on boundary-related matters to disturb peace and tranquillity along the LAC. Prime Minister Narendra Modi an eagerly watched bilateral meeting with the Chinese President Xi Jinping. 11 The meeting, on the second day of the 16th summit of the BRICS grouping, comes on the heels of a major breakthrough on patrolling by their militaries along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. Israel Joins Asian Development Bank (ADB) as 69th Member Country Israel has become the newest non-regional member of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The Manila-based lender announced the news, marking a major step for Israel in enhancing its global strategic ties and economic outreach. Israel officially joined the Asian Development Bank (ADB) as its 69th member and 20th nonregional member, after fulfilling all necessary membership requirements. The ADB’s Board of Governors approved Israel’s entry into the bank in April 2022, subject to the completion of membership formalities. This announcement officially cements Israel’s position as the 20th non-regional member of the ADB, expanding the bank’s diverse membership to a total of 69 countries. India, Pakistan extend visa-free Kartarpur Sahib corridor agreement for 5 years for pilgrims India and Pakistan have agreed to extend the validity of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor agreement for an additional five years. This decision will ensure the continued operation of the corridor, enabling Indian pilgrims to visit the sacred Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, Pakistan. Originally signed on October 24, 2019, the agreement allows for visa-free access for Indian pilgrims to the historic gurdwara, which holds immense spiritual importance as the final resting place of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism. The corridor has become a vital link for thousands of devotees seeking to pay their respects at one of the holiest sites in Sikhism. India-Germany sign MoUs and agreements in various fields to boost bilateral relationship India and Germany have signed multiple MoUs and agreements ranging from green hydrogen to innovation and technology to boost bilateral relations. The MoUs and agreements were exchanged in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in New Delhi after the delegation-level talks. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz highlighted the strategic partnership between Germany and India. India and Germany agreed on the exchange and mutual protection of classified information. Both nations also expressed their commitment to the Indo-German Green Hydrogen roadmap along with innovation and technology. Approximately 23,750 cameras would be installed across 561 FCI-owned depots. In 2013-14 CCTV cameras were installed in 61 depots, with their number increasing to 67 in 2014- 15 and extending to 446 own depots by 2018. Centre Approves ₹1 Lakh Crore for PM-RKVY and Krishonnati Yojana to Boost Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security Union Cabinet has approved the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PM-RKVY) to promote sustainable agriculture and the Krishonnati Yojana (KY) to achieve food security for agriculture self-sufficiency. The PM-RKVY and Krishonnati Yojana will be implemented with a total proposed expenditure of over one lakh crore rupees. This includes over 57 thousand crore rupees for PM-RKVY and 44 thousand 246 crores for Krishonnati Yojana. International Film Festival on Environment Wildlife ‘Vatavaran’ Inaugurated International Film Festival and Forum on Environment and Wildlife, Vatavaran was inaugurated at Paryavaran Bhawan in New Delhi. The theme for the three-day film festival is “Wetlands for Life”, focusing on the awareness and conservation of the wetlands eco-system. It should have an average annual turnover of more than ₹20,000 crore. A n average annual net worth of more than ₹10,000 crore and an average annual net profit of more than ₹2,500 crore during the last three years. Education Ministry launches registration portal for phase 5 of Yuva Sangam The Ministry of Education launched the registration portal for the fifth phase of Yuva Sangam under Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat. Yuva Sangam is an initiative by the central government to strengthen people to people connections between youth belonging to different states and union territories. Youth between the ages of 18 and 30 can participate by registering on the Yuva Sangam portal. The last date for registrations for Yuva Sangam is the 21st of this month. Average monthly income of rural households goes up by over 57% between 2016 17 and 2021 22, says NABARD survey The average monthly income of rural households has grown by over 57 percent from 2016-17 to 2021-22. According to the second All India Rural Financial Inclusion Survey by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the average monthly income increased from 8,059 rupees in 2016-17 to 12,698 rupees in 2021-22. The average monthly expenditure of households also increased from over 6,600 rupees to over 11,200 rupees. The survey found that financial savings also rose, with average household savings increasing to over 13,200 rupees, from around 9,100 rupees during the period. Around 66 percent of households reported saving in 2021-22, up from 50.6 percent in 2016-17. Meanwhile, the proportion of households with outstanding debt increased from around 47 percent in 2016-17 to 52 percent in 2021-22. Oxygen Bird Park Set To Be Inaugurated By Shri. Centre increases MSP for wheat, five other rabi crops The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), increased the Minimum Support Price for rabi crops for the next marketing season of 2025-26 with the MSP for wheat going up by ₹150 per quintal. The new MSP for a quintal of wheat is ₹2,425 in comparison to ₹2,275 per quintal, which was in place for the 2024-25 rabi season. Cabinet approves additional instalment of three percent of Dearness Allowance to Central Government employees and Dearness Relief to Pensioners 31 The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved an additional instalment of Dearness Allowance (DA) to Central Government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) to pensioners w.e.f. 01.07.2024 representing an increase of three percent (3%) over the existing rate of 50% of the Basic Pay/Pension, to compensate against price rise. This increase is in accordance with the accepted formula, which is based on the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission. The combined impact on the exchequer on account of both DA and DR would be Rs.9,448.35 crore per annum. This will benefit about 49.18 lakh central government employees and 64.89 lakh pensioners. The collaboration aims to create a knowledge pool and utilize datasets to generate data driven insights for evidence based policymaking, focusing on empowering rural communities. Ramgarh VishdhariTiger Reserve The carcass of a nearly nine-year old tigress RVTR-2 was found in the newly notified Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve (RVTR) in Bundi. 34 It lies in the southeastern part of Rajasthan in Bindi district with representation of both Vindhyan and Aaravalli elements. It consists of 481.91 sq. km. as the core area and 1019.98 sq. km. as the buffer area, for a total area of 1501.89 sq. km. It is in continuation with the buffer area of Ranthambore tiger reserve on the north-eastern side and Mukundara Hills tiger reserve on the southern side. It was notified as a tiger reserve on May 16, 2022. River : Mez , a tributary of the Chambal River, passes through the tiger reserve. Vegetation : Dry Deciduous Forest. Discovery of 16th Century Copper Plates in Tiruvallur District A significant archaeological discovery has been made at the Sri Singeeswarar temple in Mappedu village, Tiruvallur district, where a set of copper plate inscriptions dating back to the 16th Century CE were found. During a routine check of the temple’s lockers, overseen by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) Department, officials uncovered two leaves of copper plates strung together with a ring featuring the seal of the Vijayanagara Kingdom. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) confirmed that the inscriptions, engraved in 1513 during the reign of King Krishnadevaraya, are written in Sanskrit using the Nandinagari script. Govt to extend UDAN scheme for 10 more years UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik). As many as 601 routes and 71 airports have been operationalised under the regional air connectivity scheme. UDAN is aimed at enhancing regional air connectivity and making flying more affordable. It was introduced on October 21, 2016 for 10 years.
