Module 1: Understanding The Novel Lesson #1: Definition and Purpose of a Novel The Definition of a Novel What is a NOVEL? A novel is a narrative work of prose fiction that tells a story about specific human or character experiences over a considerable length. The word ‘novel’ has been derived from the Italian word ‘novella’ which means “new”. Similar to a short story, a novel has some features like a representation of characters, dialogues, setting, plot, climax, conflict, and resolution. However, it does not require all the elements to be a good novel. The Definition of a Novel Generally, novels focus on depicting the personal experiences of their characters, offering a richer and more intricate portrayal of both the individuals and their surroundings. They delve into inner emotions and thoughts, often examining complex and sometimes conflicting beliefs or values, to a greater extent than earlier literary forms. Moreover, it's not only the narratives that feel more intimate; the reading experience itself is also more personal. Unlike epic poetry and similar storytelling methods that were intended for public performance or collective consumption, novels are primarily aimed at The Purpose of a Novel The Purpose of a Novel The purpose of a novel is to explore the complexities of human experience through storytelling, allowing readers to engage with diverse perspectives and emotions. Novels foster empathy by immersing readers in the lives and struggles of characters, encouraging a deeper understanding of different cultures and societal issues. Additionally, they serve as a form of artistic expression for authors, enabling them to convey themes and ideas that challenge norms and inspire reflection. Ultimately, novels entertain while provoking thought, making them a powerful medium for both personal and cultural exploration. There have been five major reasons or purposes of a novel where each of them have their own definition and how it impacts a novel as a whole. 1. Explore Moral Dilemmas This often places the readers in the shoes of the characters facing difficult and hard decisions which would genuinely result in encouraging them to question their own moral beliefs and develop a personal moral compass through the narrative’s challenges. 2. Fostering Empathy and Understanding By presenting a diverse range of perspectives and inner lives of the novels’ characters, it allows readers to connect with them emotionally with instances or experiences outside their own that could technically lead them to a greater compassion and awareness of various social issues in the world. This engagement not only enriches the overall reader’s understanding but also promotes the discussions around complex themes within our society. 3. Means of Escapism This provides the readers to have the opportunity to tentatively leave their realties and immerse themselves into different worlds. It can be either or both entertaining and refreshing, enabling them to experience a mental break from stresses of everyday life. 4. Reflection of Social Realities Often has critiquing and commenting on the historical and cultural contexts from which they emerge. In addition, it encapsulates the struggles of individuals seeking meaning in an increasingly complex world, hence resonating with readers on a deeper level 5. Development of Imagination and Creativity Through vivid storytelling, they encourage readers to visualize scenarios, characters, and settings, enhancing their imaginative capabilities and broadening their understanding of various human experiences.
