Kinds of Poem Forms of Poetry 1. Narrative – tells a story in verse 2. Haiku – three-line Japanese form that describes something in nature. The first and third lines each have five syllables, and the second line has seven. 3. Lyric – expresses the thoughts and feelings of a single speaker, often in highly musical verse. Haiku A haiku is a style of poetry originally developed in Japan in the thirteenth century. A haiku traditionally follows a very specific structure: it is composed of three lines, the first of which has five syllables, the second seven, and the third five again. Types of Poetry Narrative Epic Lyrical Ballad Sonnet Haiku Ballad - A short story poem with a message. - Any poem or song that tells a story in short stanzas. - It can be romantic, comedic, heroic or tragic events. - It has a beginning, middle and end. Ballad - Each of the stanza should have 4 lines. - It follows the rhyme scheme ABCB. - It has a song-like rhythm. Epic - A long story-poem often mythical. - It is derived from ancient oral tradition, narrating the deeds and adventures of heroic or legendary figures. - The word epic is derived from the Ancient Greek adjective, “ epikos “ , which means poetic story. Epic - It is the earliest form of poetry and entertainment. - It is written to commemorate the struggles and adventures of kings and warriors. Topics : Legendary hero, Superhuman strength, Bravery and Adventure. Examples of Epic - The Mahabharata - The Odyssey - The Divine Comedy Sonnet - A poem of 14 lines. - It is written with pentameter and end rhymes. - It is derived from the Italian word “Sonetto” means small song or little lyric. Sonnet - Shakespeare is known for writing sonnets. - Shakespearean Sonnet uses Iambic pentameter, 10 syllables per line. Note: An Iamb is one unstressed syllable followed by one stressed syllable. Example: delight and belong Sonnet - The English Sonnet or Shakespearean Sonnet is broken down into 3 quatrains(a stanza of 4 lines) and 1 couplet (a stanza of 2 lines). Sonnet 8
