Nitrofurantoin treats acute UTI’s. Nitrofurantoin can cause GI discomfort such as anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Nitrofurantoin is to be taken with milk meals. Nitrofurantoin can cause hypersensitivity with fever, chills, severe pulmonary effects. Nitrofurantoin can cause agranulocytosis, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia and hepatoxicity. Nitrofurantoin can cause peripheral neuropathy which cause numbness and tingling of the hands and feet. Nitrofurantoin can cause headaches, drowsiness, and dizziness. Nitrofurantoin turns urine rust yellow to brown and can stain teeth. Nitrofurantoin is not for children under one month of age. Nitrofurantoin is contraindicated for patients with kidney disease. Nitrofurantoin can be taken with food. Nitrofurantoin can be used for prophylaxis of recurrent UTIs.
