Night Vocabulary List 1. Esteem- the condition of being honored. 2. Remorse- a feeling of deep regret, usually for some misdeed. 3. Compulsory- required by rule. 4. Humane- marked by concern with the alleviation of suffering. 5. Veritable- being the thing named, not false, unreal, or imaginary. 6. Err- make a mistake. 7. Beadle- a minor parish official who serves a ceremonial purpose. 8. Penury- a state of extreme poverty or destitution. 9. Dispersed- distributed or spread over a considerable extent. 10. Diplomacy- the art and practice of conducting negotiations between nations. 11. Regent- someone who rules during the absence of the monarch. 12. Rescind- to cancel officially. 13. Genocide- a systematic murder of an entire political, cultural, or religious group. 14. Surreal- characterized by fantastic and incongruous imagery. 15. Wield- to have and exercise. 16. Redemption- the act of delivering from sin or saving from evil. 17. Despair- a state in which all hope is lost or absent. 18. Annihilate- kill in large numbers. 19. Edict- a legally binding command or decision. 20. Prominent- conspicuous in position or importance. 21. Bleak- offering little or no hope. 22. Infernal- characteristic of, of resembling, Hell. 23. Transformed- given a completely different form or appearance. 24. Conflagration- a very intense and uncontrolled fire. 25. Expulsion- the act of forcing out someone or something. 26. Ghetto- a section of a city into which an ethnic or religious minority, diseased people, or social outcasts are restricted. 50. Zion- the hill of Jerusalem on which the city of David was built. Often used to refer to the Jewish nation and its people.
