An act of cultural and linguistic communication. Culture Language Translation Translation as a Term In the field of languages, translation has several meanings:  The general subject field or phenomenon.  The product – that is, the text that has been translated.  The process of producing the translation, otherwise known as translating. (Munday, 2016, p. 8) Dr. Mithaq Makki Translation Translation is not only a process of transferring meaning from one language into another language; it is a communication process to facilitate both linguistic and cultural transfer. Translation was defined by theorists as: "reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source language message, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style" (Nida and Taber 1969, p. 1 2) "rendering the meaning of a text into another language in the way that the author intended the text" (Newmark, 1988, p. 5) "a kind of activity which inevitably involves at least two languages and two cultural traditions" (Toury, 1995, p. 56) Dr. Mithaq Makki Criteria for a Good Translation  Understanding the ST language, culture and intent.  Avoiding word-for-word translation. major gifts officer knowledge is power  Taking grammatical rules into account. Dulul (2021) stated, “translation process is not an easy task. It is made up of many sub-processes and comprises task of various types” (p. 62). The process is known as stages of translation.  Read and understand the source text.  Keep the original message in mind.  Select the most appropriate vocabulary in the TL.  Use the structure that meets the receptor’s need. Dr. Mithaq Makki Competent Translators Competent translators are required to be:  Bilingual and bicultural.  In-depth knowledge of SL and TL.  Familiar with general and technical vocabulary. - Awareness of translation process - Familiarity with various topics - Using the context to deduce the intended meaning - Using common sense or subjective judgement Dr. Mithaq Makki Class Work Translate the following sentences into Arabic: 1. I graduated from the Faculty of Languages and Translation. 2. They have launched a smear campaign against the minister. 3.
