## SANGAY HUDIKATURA O TAGAPAGHUKOM The judicial branch is also called the judiciary. It is the branch that adjudicates cases involving violations of the law. It is headed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. It is composed of the Supreme Court and lower courts. According to Article VIII, Section 1 of the 1987 Constitution, the Supreme Court and lower courts have jurisdiction over disputes involving the rights of citizens. Courts decide whether someone’s legal rights have been violated and may take action to remedy any violations. ### Ang Kataas-taasang Hukuman o Korte Suprema The Supreme Court is the highest court in the country. It is composed of the Chief Justice and 14 Associate Justices. The President appoints all Justices. When a Justice’s seat becomes vacant, it must be filled within 90 days. Supreme Court justices serve until they reach the age of 70. ## Ang Senado The Senate consists of 24 Senators elected by the people. Senators serve a six-year term. It is forbidden for a senator to serve more than two consecutive terms. ## Ang Kapulungan ng mga Kinatawan The House of Representatives consists of no more than 250 representatives elected from different districts. Members are elected based on population. Some representatives are elected by party-list system, which ensures representation of labor, farmers, cultural minorities, women, youth, various sectors, and marginalized sectors that make up 20% of the population. ## dti – Kagawaran ng Kalakalan at Industriya The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) promotes industries and trade within the country. It also encourages exports and imports. It assists businesses in finding new markets for their products. It also encourages foreign businesses to invest in the Philippines. ## Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) The DENR protects the environment and natural resources in the Philippines. It prohibits the illegal logging and clearing of forests. It promotes reforestation. It promotes responsible mining. The DENR also works to protect marine resources. ## SANGAY LEHISLATIBO O TAGAPAGBATAS The Legislative Branch is also referred to as the Legislature. It is responsible for creating and passing laws. ### Ang Kongreso The 1987 Constitution vests legislative power in the Congress of the Philippines. The Congress is made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives. ## Kagawaran ng Transportasyon (DOTr) This department oversees the transportation system in the Philippines. It promotes transportation infrastructure. It regulates land, air, and sea transportation industries. It ensures that transportation services are fast, safe, reliable, and efficient for all Filipinos. ## Kagawaran ng Turismo (DOT) The Department of Tourism promotes tourism in the Philippines. It encourages foreign tourists to visit the Philippines and attracts Filipino tourists to return to their country. It develops destinations that attract tourists. ## Kagawaran ng Kagalingang Panlipunan at Pagpapaunlad (DSWD) This department serves as the main social welfare agency in the Philippines. It assists the most vulnerable Filipinos by providing social services, including temporary shelter, childcare services, livelihood programs, and other programs aimed at improving the lives of the poor and marginalized. ## Kagawaran ng Tanggulang Pambansa (DND) The Department of National Defense is responsible for defending the country. It protects the country from internal and external threats. This includes ensuring security during natural disasters, as well as safeguarding the nation from foreign aggression. It is also responsible for maintaining peace and order in the country. ## Kagawaran ng Pananalapi (DOF) The Department of Finance manages government finances. It collects taxes, implements tax policies, and manages government debt. ## Kagawaran ng Katarungan (DOJ) The Department of Justice acts as legal counsel for the government. It provides legal advice to government officials. It prosecutes criminal cases. It also handles civil cases filed against the government. ## Kagawaran ng Paggawa at Empleyo (DOLE) The Department of Labor and Employment sets labor policies and rules. It protects the rights of workers and ensures fair treatment by employers. It resolves labor disputes between workers and employers. It prioritizes worker safety. ## Kagawaran ng Kalusugan (DOH) The Department of Health is responsible for the health of all Filipinos. It prevents and manages infectious diseases. It provides health services, including free medical care. It promotes health education and awareness. ## Kagawaran ng mga Pagawain at Lansangang Bayan (DPWH) The Department of Public Works and Highways is responsible for building national infrastructure.
