Stroke occurs when there is damage to the brain from interruption of its blood supply Stroke is a medical emergency Types of stroke ○ Ischemic stroke: most common type of stroke, brain’s blood vessels become narrowed or blocked, causing severely reduced blood flow (ischemia) Blocked or narrowed blood vessels are caused by fatty deposits that build up in blood vessels or by blood lots or other debris that travel through the bloodstream, most often from the heart, and lodge in the blood vessels in the brain ○ Hemorrhagic stroke: occurs when a blood vessel in the brain leaks or ruptures ○ Transient ischemic attack (TIA): known as ‘ministroke’ which is a temporary period of symptoms similar to those in a stroke Doesn’t cause permanent damage Caused by temporary decrease in blood supply to part of the brain, which may last as little as 5 minutes It is important to identify the signs and symptoms immediately Stroke team may be activated by any staff member NYU time goals ○ Door to attending physician evaluation (
