Venturina-Fano, MD, DPPS, DPAPP BRONCHOPULMONARY DYSPLASIA Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia First described by Northway et al in 1967 Formerly Chronic Lung Disease of Infancy Chronic lung disorder that is most common among children – Born prematurely – Low birth weights – Prolonged mechanical ventilation (exposure to positive pressure ventilation and high oxygen concentrations) Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Presence of chronic respiratory signs, a persistent oxygen requirement, and an abnormal chest radiograph at 1 month of age or at 36 weeks postconceptional age Diagnostic criteria for establishing BPD Gestational age < 32 weeks >32 weeks Time point of 36 weeks PMA or discharge >28 days but < 56 days postnatal assessment to home, whichever comes age or discharge to home, first whichever comes first Treatment with oxygen >21% for at least 28 days Mild BPD Breathing room air at 36 wk Breathing room air by 56 days PMA or discharge, whichever postnatal or discharge, whichever comes first comes first Moderate Need for
