# Neuron Structure and Function The image depicts a neuron, a fundamental unit of the nervous system. The neuron is divided into segments, each with specific roles in transmitting information: ## 1. Receptive Segment * **Function:** Binding of neurotransmitters released from presynaptic neurons; production of graded potentials. ## 2. Initial Segment * **Function:** Summation of graded potentials; initiation of action potential. ## 3. Conductive Segment * **Function:** Propagation of action potential. ## 4. Transmissive Segment * **Function:** Action potential causes release of neurotransmitter. The diagram shows the flow of information (action potentials) through the neuron and the release of neurotransmitter at the end of the neuron. Neurotransmitters are depicted as small red elements being released into the space between neurons (synapse).
