” THE TYPES OF JOINTS AND MOVEMENTS 1. Immovable or Fixed Joint (Fibrous) These joints are held together by tough tissue which develops during childhood. Examples include: the Cranium, pelvis and vertebrae 2. Slightly Movable Joints (Cartilaginous) Movement is needed but only to a certain point e.g the vertebral column Individual vertebrae are separated by cartilage 3. Free Movable Joints (Synovial) These joints are also called synovial and allow movement to take place. ” THE TYPES OF SYNOVIALS JOINTS 1. Ball and Socket Joint In this type of joint, one end of the bone is shaped like a ball, and it fits into a hollow socket at the end of another joint. Held together by ligaments and 2. Hinge Joint HINGE JOINTS allow extensive flexion and extension (Bending and straightening) with only a small amount of rotation. 3. Pivot Joint PIVOT JOINTS allow only rotation. 4. Gliding Joint GLIDING JOINTS allow flexion and extension through a slight gliding motion between the ends of small bones such as hands and feet. 5. Saddle Joints SADDLE JOINTS occur where concave and convex surfaces meet. The saddle joints allow the movement of the joint forward and backwards, and 6. Condyloid Joint Within the CONDYLOID JOINT the full convex shape of one bone end, fits into the full concave shape of an adjoining bone. ” THE CONNECTIVE TISSUES CARTILAGE Cartilage is a strong, flexible connective tissue that protects your joints and bones. It acts as a shock absorber throughout your LIGAMENT A fibrous connecting tissue that attaches bone to bone, and usually serves to hold structures together and keep them TENDON A fibrous connecting tissue that attaches muscle to bone. A tendon serves to move the bone or structure. ” THE TYPES OF JOINTS MOVEMENTS EXTENSION AND FLEXION ABDUCTION AND ADDUCTION, CIRCUMDUCTION AND ROTATION PLANTAR FLEXION AND DORSIFLEXION; PRONATION AND SUPINATION Muscul ar Syste m Introduction The muscular system is responsible for the movement of the human body. Attached to the bones of the skeletal system are about 700 named muscles that make up roughly half of a person’s body weight. Each of these muscles is a discrete organ constructed of skeletal muscle tissue, blood vessels, tendons, and nerves. ” FUNCTIONS OF MUSCULAR SYSTEM FUNCTIONS OF THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM 01. 02. 03. The smooth muscles in the bowel are also called visceral CARDIAC MUSCLE Cardiac Muscles are responsible for the heartbeat and only exist in the heart. SKELETAL MUSCLE Skeletal muscle, attached to bones, is responsible for skeletal movements. How do muscles make the body move? SKELETAL The moveable end MUSCLE of the muscle that attaches to the bone being pulled is called the muscle’s insertio n, and the end of the muscle attached to a fixed (stabilized) bone is PRIME MOVERS V.S. SYNERGIST Prime mover muscles Primesometimes moverscalled andthe synergist agonist, is the muscle that provides the primary force driving the action. An antagonist muscle is in opposition to a prime mover in that it provides some resistance and/or Definition of Concepts Mercury Saturn Mars Mercury is the It’s composed mostly Despite being red, smallest planet in of hydrogen and Mars is actually a the Solar System helium cold place
