Summary

This document presents an overview of the muscles of the gluteal region, including detailed descriptions for each. It explains different aspects such as origins, insertions, nerve supply and actions of each muscle. This would be a great resource for anatomy studies.

MUSCLES OF GLUTEAL REGION DR. NIDA WAHEED MSC (PT), DPT(D), BS(PT) MUSCLES OF GLUTEAL REGION 1. Gluteus Maximus 2. Gluteus Medius 3. Gluteus Minimus 4. Tensor Fasciae Latae 5. Piriformis 6. Superior Gemellus 7. Inferior Gemellus 8. Obturator Internus 9. Obturator Externus 10. Quadratus Femoris GLUTEUS MAXIMUS GLUTEUS MAXIMUS Origin: Outer surface of ilium. Posterior surface of sacrum. Sacrotuberous ligament. Insertion: Ilio-tibial tract Gluteal tuberosity of femur Nerve Supply: Inferior gluteal nerve Action: Extension of the hip joint Lateral rotation of the hip joint Maintenance of the extended knee joint GLUTEUS MEDIUS Origin: Outer surface of ilium (between the iliac crest, posterior and middle gluteal lines). Insertion: Lateral surface of the greater trochanter of femur Nerve Supply: Superior gluteal nerve. Action: 1. Abduction of the thigh 2.Tilts pelvis when walking to permit opposite GLUTEUS MINIMUS Origin: Outer surface of ilium (between the middle and inferior gluteal lines). Insertion: Anterior surface of the greater trochanter of femur Nerve Supply: Superior gluteal nerve. Action: 1. Abduction of the thigh 2. Tilts pelvis when walking to permit opposite leg to clear ground TENSOR FASCIAE LATAE Origin: Outer lip of iliac crest behind the anterior superior iliac spine. Insertion: Through the ilio-tibial tract to the lateral condyle of the tibia. Nerve Supply: Superior gluteal nerve. Action: 1.Abduction of the thigh (with gluteus medius and PIRIFORMIS Origin: Anterior surface of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th sacral vertebrae. Insertion: Upper border of the greater trochanter of femur. Nerve Supply: Anterior rami of the 1st and 2nd sacral nerves. Action: Lateral rotation of the thigh (hip joint) OBTURATOR INTERNUS Origin: Inner surface of obturator membrane and surrounding bones. Insertion: Upper border of the greater trochanter of femur Nerve Supply: Nerve to obturator internus. Action: Lateral rotation of the thigh at hip joint. OBTURATOR EXTERNUS Origin: from the outer surface of the obturator membrane and adjacent pubic and ischial bones Insertion: into the greater trochanter( trochanteric fossa) Nerve supply: obturator nerve Action: lateral rotation of the thigh SUPERIOR GEMELLUS Origin: Spine of ischium. Insertion: the upper border of the greater trochanter of femur and tendon of obturator internus muscle. Nerve Supply: Nerve to obturator internus. Action: Lateral rotation of the thigh (hip joint). INFERIOR GEMELLUS Origin: Upper margin of ischial tuberosity. Insertion: The upper border of the greater trochanter of femur and tendon of obturator internus muscle. Nerve Supply: Nerve to quadratus femoris. Action: Lateral rotation of the thigh (hip joint) QUADRATUS FEMORIS Origin: Lateral border of ischial tuberosity. Insertion: Quadrate tubercle of the femur Nerve Supply: Nerve to quadratus femoris. Action: Lateral rotation of the thigh (hip joint).
