Prepared by Mahmoud Alkhateeb/College of nursing Definition: What is mentoring? 1) Mentoring Is a learning process/relationship that connects expert individuals (e.g., teachers) with those with less experience who need help and support (e.g., students). It helps and support those with less experience to manage their own learning to maximize their potential to success, personal growth, career development, & psychological well-being, to: 1) Develop skills 2) Develop generic skills (communication, problem-solving, teamwork, time management) 3) Improve their performance 4) Achieve goals academic success, Even beyond classroom Beyond classroom Prepared by Mahmoud Alkhateeb/College of nursing Definition: What is mentoring? academic success, career development, & psychological well-being (self-acceptance, positive relationships with others, and personal growth and development) Prepared by Mahmoud Alkhateeb/College of nursing Mentor & Mentee A) The Mentee A person who needs help, support and guidance: Has less experience and skills (e.g. a student). A wide range of interpersonal skills. 4. Effective communication skills that accommodate their emotional, social and cognitive needs. 5. Involves a number of meetings with the same mentor over a period of time. Requires higher levels of commitment. Training is provided. 2. Informal mentoring Providing a mentee with the advice and support through informal mentoring relationships (e.g, through network). Unstructured. Training is not provided. 3. One-stop mentoring advice A mentee (or a student) select the expert mentor in the required field. One time meeting. Direction and clarifying. Prepared by Mahmoud Alkhateeb/College of nursing Advising The mentor is an advisor Provides suggestions and recommendations on what their mentee should do (based on regulations, personal and professional experience). Academic, physiological, and career Maintains the privacy and confidentiality of the mentees. Makes sure that the mentees don’t make any mistakes Prepared by Mahmoud Alkhateeb/College of nursing Developing The mentor observes, listens and identify the red-flags (e.g., defects, not listening, poor communication, etc.) that they recognize in their mentees' performance. The mentor highlights the positive qualities needed by the mentee and work to develop them.
