MODULE 1 THE TEACHING PROFESSION This module consists of three lessons. Lesson 1 deals with teaching as a profession. The elements of a profession are discussed followed by the analysis of teaching to determine whether it has all the elements of a profession. Lesson 2 deals with the historical development of teaching as a profession in the Philippines. Lesson 3 describes teaching as not just a job but a mission. It also explains that teaching is a vocation, a special calling. These will help you gain better understanding in order to wholeheartedly embrace their calling as teachers. Learning Outcomes: 1. Explain teaching as a vocation and mission MODULE 1 LESSON 1: TEACHING AS A PROFESSION Lesson Outcome: At the end of the lesson you must have explained the meaning of teaching as a profession. Lawyers and medical doctors are entitled to professional fees (PF). 3. Antonio, after taking his oath as a professional teacher was told: “You are now a professional”. 4. Initial Professional Education Professionals should complete a university program or course in their chosen fields such as accountancy, engineering, nursing, and teaching. This entails long and arduous years of college preparation. 2. Accreditation The university programs offered should be approved by a regulatory body to ensure that graduates start their professional lives with competence. In the Philippines, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) acts as a regulatory body. 3. Licensing Licensing in a profession is mandatory. It is administered by a government authority. The Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) is the regulatory body which issues professional license in the Philippines. 4. Professional Development Professional development is an ongoing professional education which ensures that professionals improve their knowledge and skills once they begin their professional practice. In the Philippines this is mandated by RA 10912, otherwise known as the Continuing Professional Development act of 2016. 5. Membership in Professional Societies Professionals are part of a community of individuals in the same field of expertise who put the professional standards above individual interest or that of their employers. These community of professionals are called professional societies. These societies establish establishes standards for moral and ethical values and commitment to public interest. 6. Code of Ethics Every profession has a code of ethics to ensure that its practitioners behave according to established standards. The code of ethics states what the professional should do or behave in relation to their practice. Professionals may lose their license or membership in professional societies if they violate provisions in the code of ethics. Apply: 1.
