MODULE 8 Principles of Design Unity and Harmony Rhythm and Variation Balance and Proportion Emphasis and Contrast Week Covered: Week 10-11 Lesson Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to: 1. Identify the Principles of Design. 2. Define and translate principles of design in an artwork. Quizon, MAEd 1 LET’S GET STARTED Let’s observe these structures. Aside from the elements of arts like line, color, texture, form and style, what makes Structure A differ froms Structure B. Structure A Structure B Art Appreciation | Corazon SD. Quizon, MAEd 2 DESIGN is the overall organizational structure of a formal elements in a work of art. It is the proper arrangement of the different art elements in order to produce something beautiful. It makes object differ from one another. Good designs are the result of careful and correct application of the principles of design. The most important factor is to execute these principles in order to achieve beauty. ARCHITECTS give order to space through their design of building considering the: funds the exterior and interior aspects as well as doors and windows. KINDS OF DESIGN: 1. STRUCTURAL DESIGN - shows strength and durability of materials. ex: monument, buildings, bridges, towers 2. DECORATIVE DESIGN - should meet requirement such as simplicity proportionality and sustainability of materials to the purpose. Decorative design - is the surface enrichment of structural design. Its principal function is to enhance beauty so it is called "the luxury of the design". In the application of decorative design, simplicity is very essential. It gives strength to the materials. Decorative design must be: simple, moderate and must serve the purpose of structural design. Art Appreciation | Corazon SD. Quizon, MAEd 3 THE PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN 1. BALANCE - refers to the visual weight of the elements of the composition. It is a sense that the painting feels stable and "feels right". Imbalance causes a feeling of discomfort in the viewer. Three Forms of Balance a. SYMMETRY - the elements used on one side are reflected to the other. This offers the most stable mind sense into any artwork. b. ASYMMETRICAL - the elements are not the same (one of the same weight on each side, putting heavier on one side.) c. RADIAL - there is a central point in the composition, around which elements and objects are distributed, as in spokes coming out of the hub of a bicycle tire. 2. SCALE AND PROPORTION Scale - pertains to the size in relation to what is normal to the figure or object. Proportion - deals with the proper or significant relation between two things or parts. The principle of proportion is sometimes called the "Law of Relationship", this is expressed in size, number and position. The space surrounding the objects play an important relation to the other objects. Art Appreciation | Corazon SD. Quizon, MAEd 4 3. EMPHASIS AND CONTRAST Emphasis - allows the attention of the viewer to a focal point accentuating or drawing attention to these elements or objects. This can be done through the manipulation of the elements or through the assistance of other principles, especially that of contrast. Contrast - is the disparity between the elements that figure into composition. One object may be made stronger compared to other objects. This may be done using the elements of art. ex: using negative or positive using complimentary colors: white, black 4. UNITY AND VARIETY Unity - if the painting is unified and such all elements fit together comfortably. Variety - aims to retain the interest by allowing patches or areas that boil excite and allow the eye to rest. In art, too much unity creates monotony, too much variety creates chaos. You need both. 5. RHYTHM – is created when an element is repeated, creating implied movement. Variety of repetition helps invigorate rhythm as depicted in the artwork 6. HARMONY The most essential of all the principles of design. It is important in story letter and poetry writing in order to be understood. In visual art, it refers to the adaptation of visual elements to each other, the agreement between the parts of a composition which results in unity. Some of the possible ways to achieve harmony are repetition, contrast, transition, harmonizing ideas and fitness in use. Art Appreciation | Corazon SD. Quizon, MAEd 5 LET’S WRAP IT UP The principles of art are essential to any art work. It is the overall organizational structure of a formal elements in a work of art. It makes object differ from one another. Structural and decorative design are the two kinds of design. Structural design shows strength and durability of materials whereas Decorative design should meet the requirements such as durability of materials to the purpose. Balance, scale and proportion, emphasis and contrast, unity and variety, rhythm and harmony are the different principles of design. These principles will provide explicit ways in which these elements are used, how they are manipulated, how they interact and how they inform the overall composition of the art work to assess the artist in conveying his intention.
