LET’S GET DOWN TO EXPLORE In performing or creating artwork, every art has a subject and a content. Subject of Art is something represented or indicated in a work of art. in literature – the subject of an essay. in painting and other visual arts – it is an element that answers the what of the piece of painting. it also answers what is it all about. Subject Types: 1. Representational Arts or Objective Arts – are arts that have subjects. ex: painting, sculpture, graphic arts, literature and theater arts are classified as representational arts. This figurative or representational work from the seventeenth century depicts easily recognizable objects–ships, people, and buildings. 2. Non-Representational Art or Non-Objective Art – are arts that do not have subjects. ex: music, architecture, and many Delaunay’s work is a primary example of early nonrepresentational art, bearing no trace of any reference to anything recognizable from the real world. Criteria on choosing Subject 1. Artist has a freedom to choose the subject. 2. It involves his personal interest. 3. He should consider the availability of medium, time and patronage he will get. NATURE – physical environment Landscapes Seascapes Favorite subjects of Chinese, Cityscapes Japanese and some Filipino painters. Factual Meaning - The most rudimentary level of meaning for it may be extracted from the identifiable and recognizable forms in the artwork and understanding of how relevant relate to one another. (e.g. Pope unveils sculpture commemorating migrants and refugees) 2. Convectional meaning – pertains to the acknowledge interpretation of the artwork using motifs, signs, symbols and other cypher as basis of its meaning. This is established through time strengthened by recurrence use and wide acceptance by its viewers or audience and scholar who study them. (e.g. William Sanderson's "Autumn Fantasy") 3. Subjective Meaning – When subjective is consulted a variety of meaning may arise when a particular work of art is ready. (e.g. Subject Subjective Subjected by David Anthony) LET’S WRAP IT UP There is a sense of panic when one is confused with the questions, ‘What am I seeing?” or rather “What am I supposed to see” In gaining the basics of interpreting the subject and content, it is hoped that the individuals sensitivity and perceptiveness to art will be developed. Arts can be categorized into two types: Representational art - this types of art have subjects that refers to subject or events occurring in the real world. While the Non- representational art does not make a reference to the real world, bearing no trace of reference or information to anything recognizable from the real world. In painting and other artwork, artists explore diverse ways of inferring where the sources and kinds if subject of their paintings or what do they paint. Sources of art subject includes nature, history, Greek and Roman mythology etc. For the Kinds of Subject includes history, still-life, scenes, animals, figures, myths, or mythology. Content of arts can be classified as Factual content is the most rudimentary level of meaning for it may be extracted from identifiable and recognizable forms of artwork. LET’S WORK ON THIS A.
