Visual Arts These artworks are perceived by our eyes which may be classified into graphic arts and plastic arts. 1. Graphic Arts They have flat two-dimensional surface such as painting, drawing, photography and other products of the printing industry. It covers the commercial arts like the design of book advertisements, signs, posters and other display for advertisement. 2. LET’S TALK ABOUT ARTS AND ITS NATURE Art is derived from the Latin word “ars” meaning ability or skill. Art is something we do. It is an expression of our thoughts, emotions, intimation and desires. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creation and ways of expression including, painting, architecture, sculpture, literature, music and dance. The great thing about Art is that it enables us to express ourselves not only by writing a poem or a story, but also by painting a picture, carving a statue or composing a piece of music. NATURE OF ART It is one of the oldest and most important means of expressions developed by man. The earliest arts way back to the pre-historic times. The Great Homeric Epic “Iliad and the Odyssey” were written before the beginning of recorded history and believed to be a collection of earliest tales. Art Appreciation | Prof. Rosario R. Tesorero 3 LET’S GET DOWN TO EXPLORE Some basic Assumptions about Arts. Our attitude towards arts maybe influence by these assumptions. 1. Art has been created by various people, at all places and time. 2. Art does not grow old. 3. Art is something to be seen or heard. 4. Art is the product of man’s imagination, good taste and skill in doing things. Art Appreciation | Prof. Rosario R. Tesorero 4 5. Art is not nature. Its beauty and artistry could be enhanced. LET’S WRAP IT UP Art has always been part of man’s growth civilization. It is something we do. It is an expression of our thought, emotion, intimation and desires. Art that can be perceived by our eyes are visual arts. It includes painting, sculpture and architecture. It can be classified as graphic arts that have two-dimensional forms and plastic arts that have three-dimensional forms. Four assumptions on art are; 1. Art is universal. Art is in every part of the globe and in ever period of time. That is what is meant by universality. 2. Art is not nature. Art is not being nature, not even attempting to simply mirror nature. Art is always a creation of the artist not nature. 3. Art involves experience. Without experience, there is no art. The artist has to be foremost, a perceiver who is directly in touch with art. 4.
