Midterm Exam Revision Document Section One: British Romanticism (Unit One, 25 Marks) This section is worth 25 points and is composed of multiple choice questions. For this section your primary revision document should be the unit one PDF taken from the teacher’s PPT. You need to be able to: - Identify what Romanticism is - Key Features of Romanticism - A basic historical understanding of Romanticism - The Role of Orientalism in Romanticism - The Artworks of the Romantics - Romantic & Byronic Heroes - A basic understanding of William Blake’s ‘London’ poem. Section Two Gothic Fiction (Unit One, 20 Marks) This section is worth 20 points and is composed of multiple choice questions. For this section your primary revision document should be the unit one PDF taken from the teacher’s PPT. - Be able to define and identify key elements of the Gothic genre and understand it as a development of Romanticism. - Understand the history of Gothic fiction including the etymology of the term ‘Goth’ - To understand key concepts in Gothic fiction for instance monstrosity, the grotesque, supernatural, atavism and Edmund Burke’s philosophical discussion of the sublime as a combination of beauty and terror. - To be able to identify often used narrative structures in 19th century Gothic fiction. - The artwork of Dark Romanticism - To be able to identify key points pertaining to 19th century fears about women reading Gothic fiction. - The role of alchemy in Gothic literature Section Three: Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein (25 Marks) The following are a series of short response questions. You are expected to respond with roughly FOUR or more detailed sentences (not including quotations), make use of literary concepts pertaining to Gothic fiction and use formal academic language. This section contains four question each either worth six or seven marks. In this section you are expected to an analysis of certain elements of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein. For your revision focus on: a) Themes b) Characters Section Four: Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein: Essay Response Question The following are short essay questions, respond to only one question, for full marks you will need to write a minimum of 300 words and follow the guidelines of the provided rubric. Note the rubric can be found on the final page of the exam paper. Chose only ONE of the following questions to respond to, making use of parts of at least two of the quotations provided. (30 Marks) Here you will have a choice of one question out of two. You will also be provided with a list of quotes to help with your analysis. You must use the quotes for your analysis in order to obtain full marks. You will also be given a rubric on the last page, this is a guide to help you reach full marks.
