Metric System International System of Measurement (SI) - Most of the world uses metrics - USA, Liberia, Myanmar do NOT use metrics - Used for quantitative research - ‘numbers’ data (quantities!) - Decimal system based on 10 - prefixes are added to a base unit - Used by scientists and hospitals - Measurements always reported in metric units Meter (m)- base unit of length - amount of distance between two points Gram (g)- base unit of mass - amount of matter in something - not to be confused with weight - weight is the amount of gravity pulling on an object Liter (L)- base unit of volume - amount of space an object takes up Celsius (°C)- base unit of temperature - hot/cold differences TABLE 1 Prefix Abbreviation Meaning mega M one million (1 000 000) kilo k one thousand (1 000) hecto h one hundred (100) deka da ten (10) g, m, L one (1) deci d one tenth (0.1) centi c one hundredth (0.01) milli m one thousandth (0.001) micro μ one millionth (0.000001) Kilo- means 1000 of that unit 1 kilometer (km) = 1000 meters (m) Centi- means 1/100 of that unit 1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm) Milli- means 1/1000 of that unit 1 Liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (mL) Rules to follow: 1. Measure accurately- no “almost, about…” -begin at 0 line, not ruler edge 2. Place a zero in front of a decimal ( 0.135 ) 3. No commas (3000 not 3,000) 4. Include units 5. No fractions 6. Measuring Length Label your Table Of Contents with “Metric Introduction” Turn to the first blank page of your Lab Notebook Label the top with the lab title “Metric Introduction” Date and sign the page Have your metric ruler out Measuring Length 1. Look at your metric ruler. There should be 30 centimeters on the ruler, designated by the biggest mark. Between each centimeter (cm) mark, there should be 10 smaller marks called millimeters (mm). Measuring Length 2. Learn the "centimeter" marks, or the "10 millimeter" marks. Measuring Length 3. Learn the “0.5 of a centimeter" marks, or the "5 millimeter" marks. Measuring Length 4. Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in this cylinder? Record the answer in the data section of your lab notebook Measuring Volume What causes the meniscus? A concave meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquid attract those of the container.
