Mental Health Morgan Cortazar, Maggie Osborne, Shae Thomas, Nathan Isaacs Topic and Problem Statement Topic: Mental Health Health Problem: Depression Health Problem Statement:Extreme depression can lead a child to think about suicide or plan for suicide. For youth ages 10-24 years, suicide is among the leading causes of death (CDC,2024) Brief background What is Depression Depression according to the national institute of mental health is a common but serious mood disorder it causes severe symptoms that affect how a person feels, thinks, and handles daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working. (Depression, n.d.) Disparities: Children who grow up in low income households have less access to outside resources such as healthcare, education and extracurricular activities. Children that come from different cultural backgrounds, such as African americans and Hispanics, face racial biases in society. Children who identify as a sexual minority have three times increased odds to committing suicide. Social Determinants of Health Religious beliefs: children who are religious or may have to wear religious attire may get bullied. Age groups: Children who appear to be larger, too tall, too short or dont look like they fit their age group may be singled out by teachers, parents and/or peers, leading to exclusion and insecurity. School environment: High academic pressure or difficulty in school can increase depression symptoms. Family Structure: DIvorce, single parent households and/or same sex parents can increase feelings of insecurity in kids, raising the risk of depression.
