Mega Hounds Chapter one The sunset illuminated the forest in a warm hue of gold as it started to set. A lone figure stood on a mossy rock in a clearing, enjoying his peace. His name was Nicko. He was a junior in highschool with no idea what his calling was and what he wanted to do with his life. He often came to his rock to think and watch the sunset, it always made him feel better. ‘What to do?’ That was the question he always wanted to know. The chilliness of the early October air felt crisp as he inhaled. He stood up, wrapping himself in his hoodie. “Alright, going home.” He took about three steps before stopping. “And which way is that?“ He asked himself. He knew that his house was east of the woods he was in, so he turned to the bark of the tree. He could’ve sworn that moss grew mostly on the north side of things like trees and rocks. “Never eat soggy worms. That way.” He unknowingly pointed west like a fool. He walked west, the orange-ish brown, fallen leaves of autumn crunching under his shoes. His flashlight shone a path for him around trees. He had been walking for around twenty minutes through the dark woods when panic set in. It should’ve taken him around ten minutes to emerge from the woods, had he gotten lost? His breathing increased slightly, he had watched countless videos online about skin walkers and such being deep in the woods. He didn't believe them, but there was this thought that he ever so slightly believed that they were real. The sun was now on the other side of the world, the temperature dropping. He pushed on, after all, it was just a little chill. A howl called out from somewhere out of sight. This wasn't a wolf howl, it was something bigger. The sheer power reverberated in his bones. He slowly turned in circles, hoping the light from his phone would reflect off of whatever was watching him. The light reflected off of a pair of eyes and he stared at them. His mind raced with lots of things. The creature moved forward, its steps being muffled by something, it was making a sound almost like it was panting. The creature stepped into the light and it was a dog that kind of resembled a Japanese kai ken and an Akita of somesort. It stood at around 3 feet on all fours, its body covered in short, sandy brown fur, covered in black stripes, its tail had a bush of a tail on it, and it looked like it had a mane, it belly was white, going up to its chin and some of its paws. If Nicko was being honest, it looked like a dog-lion hybrid. The dog slowly approached him, its tongue hanging out of its mouth. “Hey.” He cautiously held his hand out. The dog closed its mouth and sniffed Nicko’s hand before nuzzling against it. He rubbed the dog affectionately. The dog felt like an electric blanket, set to the perfect temperature. He couldn't stop himself from hugging it. “This dog is awesome.” Nicko thought to himself. The dog barked, like it could understand him perfectly. He rubbed the dog, its smooth fur warming his hand. “I don't know why, but I have the feeling that you are special. I mean, you have to be some exotic breed or something. What else can you do? Are you trained” He asked. The dog let out a bark as it started to grow in size, four feet, four feet and six inches, five feet, six feet, six feet and four inches. The dog stood at an impressive six feet and four inches, four inches taller than Nicko himself. The dog bowed, allowing Nicko to climb on its back. “You are one of a kind.” He said, gripping tightly onto the dog's fur. The dog let out a gruff as it started to run. Its speed was impressive for its size, he estimated around a little faster than a race horse. What was more impressive, however, was its agility. It dodges trees gracefully, almost like it was dancing. Wind whipped past his ear, he didn't know what this was anymore, but for now he didnt care he was too caught up in the moment. The ‘dog’ jumped onto a fallen tree and spring boarded over another fallen tree. They ran through the woods. The heat from the dog's fur made Nicko practically immune to the cold. The ‘dog’ broke free from the woods and ran down the street, passing cars and running red lights. “Woooo!” He yelled. The ‘dog’ let out a howl as it ran. A right turn was coming up on Franklin Avenue and Nicko pulled the ‘dog's’ fur to the right. It hit a sharp turn, running down the street, as its tongue failed around. Cars honked, people yelled, some pointed as the duo thundered down the street. With a left turn they were running down Nicko’s neighborhood. A long, quiet street, with beautiful street lamps. The lights of the house shone like gold in the darkness. House after house until- “Stop!” He yelled. The ‘dog’ pivoted its weight and slid across the ground to a stop. “Ahhhhhh!” Nicko yelled as he lost his grip and was sent rolling across the cold pavement of Oliver’s street, he lay there. The ‘dog’ went over to him sniffing him. He jumped up. “Wooo! We should definitely do that again!” The ‘dog’ let out a smile gruff in agreement. He rubbed the ‘dog's’ fur. “Hmmm. I should really give you a name. I'm thinking-” He thought for a bit. “Royal.” The ‘dog’ agreed. “Royal it is then.” Nicko said with a smile. “Anyway you can–like shrink down or something?” He asked. Royal nodded and let out a muffled bark before shrinking back down to its three foot size. “You cannot be a dog, you can literally grow to sizes that are literally impossible for dogs to grow, you have the speed and agility of a greyhound despite being over two times their size, and you can understand every word I say. You’re not a dog, you’re like a mega hound or something.” “Nicko Bowman!” A lady called out. Her peachy skin was dressed in a baby lavender night dress, a matching hat for it, and a big brown puffer coat. She had a flashlight in her hand and a stern expression on her face. Nicko let out a guilty smile, his pupil dilating from the light. Royal barked at her. “Oh hello, Mrs.Taj, how are you this fine evening?” He asked, knowing he was in deep water. “Royal sit.” Royal stopped and sat on his hunches. “I've been–out.” Mrs.Taj eyed Royal then quickly turned her attention to Nicko. “Evening? It is 10:17 on a school night! Your sister is going to be furious.” She walked towards him. “And you've been out? Out where? Out thing long? Explain yourself young man.” “The woods. I’ve been out in the woods. As for my sister, she’d only be furious if you told her.” He said, implying that Mrs.Taj not tell on him. Mrs.Taj gave him a smug look then rolled her eyes. “Oh come on, you need your sleep.” She looked at Royal. “As for that mutt of yours. It can be locked in the basement until tomorrow, when you and your sister can get this whole ordeal situated.” She walked to her house with Nicko and Royal following. He rubbed Royal’s warm fur, feeling a sense of pride in his strange creature. “He’s not a mutt, he’s an Akita-Kai ken mix. His name is Royal and he is my new dog I bought. He cost me one thousand and five hundred dollars.” He lied. “He’s fully trained, and he does good without a leash. I think you should give him a chance.” He had a crazy idea. “He is special Mrs.Taj.” She scoffed. “Special? He is a mutt, not even a purebred, like my dog, Classy.” Nicko felt that Mrs.Taj spoiled Classy too much. Classy is Mrs.Taj’s purebred poodle, she pampers that dog so much it isn't even funny. It wasn't wrong to spend money on dogs, but when you are spending around five thousand dollars on your dog it is a problem but heck, who was he to judge? Nicko shook his head. “Rub his fur.” Mrs.Taj, rolled her eyes and rubbed her peachy hands across his fur. Her eyes widened. “He feels like a heater! He’s so warm.” She exclaimed. Royal’s bushy tail wagged with joy from the praise he received from Mrs.Taj. “I never felt a dog's fur feel like it's actually producing heat! This is sublime, I need a dog like this! Where did you get him from?” The question caught Nicko off guard but he kept a straight face. He quickly thought of a lie. “I got him from this person who sells dogs, he’s kinda like a traveling salesman in a way, you know?” He asked, taking Mrs.Taj believing his words with a grain of salt. “I suppose.” Mrs.Taj said. “Lots of people sell dogs and puppies in this city so I guess it's not out of the realm of possibilities.” Chapter two The alarm sounded and Nicko's eyes shot open. He checked the time. It was 6 am. He looked around for a bit, before realizing where he was. He changed his clothes, washed his face, brushed his teeth, and picked out his hair in around thirty minutes. He sat on the couch in Mrs.Taj’s living room, Classy staring at him from her dog bed. He scrolled through his social media, letting the time pass. That's when he saw it; Pictures and short videos of him and Royal running down the street. The caption read. ‘Person riding dog bigger than a horse captured on October-8th at 10:05 pm.’ He watched the video through, reliving the moments of Royal passing and dodging the cars. He went to the comments. ‘This has to be fake.’ One comment read. ‘I wish I had a dog like that!’ Another said. ‘This has to be one of the fakest things I saw all my life.’ Some person said. He let out a small chuckle. “They don't know how real he is.” He checked the time, it was 7:30 am. “Gotta get to school.” He thought about walking, but the thought about having a mega hound taking you to school was too strong. “Royal, let's ride.” He said, leading the mega hound outside. Royal sat down, his tongue hanging outside his mouth. “Royal, mount size.” He said. Royal tilted his head. He thought for a second. “Aww who's my good Royal?” He asked in a baby voice. Royal’s tail wagged and his ears perked up. “Royal, travel size.” Royal barked and grew in size. Nicko climbed on Royal’s back, the heat from his fur giving him protection from the cold. “Alright Royal, we have a set destination so go along with me.” He gave Royal a gentle pat on the shoulder? Royal let out a happy bark and trotted down the sidewalk. Royal and Nicko strolled down the street, as cars rolled past, recorded, took pictures, and tried to get his attention. A yellow sports car drove alongside them. “Hey kid, how much for that dog? I’ll give you twelve thousand dollars and this sports car.” Nicko rolled his eyes. “Ughh it's starting to stink around here, let's blow this place Royal!” Royal let out a gruff as he picked up speed, running faster than the yellow car. The duo let out a howl as Royal picked up more speed, his tongue hanging from his mouth. “Turn!” He pulled Royal’s fur to the right. The mega hound drifted to the left and thundering down the sidewalk. Soon enough they made it to school. All eyes were on him as he and Royal trotted up to the school. The students made a commotion. He felt like a big deal. He jumped off of Royal’s back and placed his forehead to Royal’s. “Royal shrink and sit until I come back.” He said. The mega hound barked and shrunk back to its smaller size. “Thank you.” He gave Royal a pat. Two girls ran up to him. “Can we rub your dog?” They asked. “He is so adorable! Please!” Nicko nodded. The girls started rubbing Royal obsessively. “He’s so warm! He feels like sunshine!” She exclaimed. By now tons of people rubbed Royal. Nicko watched, feeling a huge wave of pride. Royal grew to his six foot size, enjoying the attention of the crowd of people. “Attention seeker.” He laughed to himself. “Hey! Go inside of the school!” A older aged man, with no hair, mixed skin, and dark brown eyes. His eyebrows were perked up. He was wearing a brown suit with a blue and gray striped tie finished with black loafers. “Get away from the dog, it could be dangerous or feral!” He yelled. His name was Mr.Johnson. He was the principal of his school, Eastern Arkansas high. “Nicko Bowman, you stay out here, everyone else, inside or I'm handing out free I.S.S trips to everyone.” The air was filled with complaining, over exaggerated sighs and insults to the principal as the students flooded inside. “So Mr.Bowman. Are you aware that your–dog? Is a major distraction and you can't have it on school grounds.” Royal went up to sniff him. He took a step back and pushed Royal back. “Royal is my emotional support dog.” He lied. Royal let out a yawn before curling into a ball and laying down. He had a thought. “Royal, shrink?” He asked, with uncertainty. Royal looked up at him and gruffed. “Please?” He reassured his companion. The mega hound shrunk to the size of a chihuahua. “Is this better?” He asked Mr.Johnson. Royal curled back into a ball, snoring. Mr.Johnson sighed. “Alright, but you will be picking up after him, we are not responsible for feeding him, and you will be held responsible for any property damage to the school and students. Also you will be held responsible for any harm that he does to the students, do I make myself clear?” Nicko nodded. “Yessir, crystal.” With those words they walked into the school, Royal following in his miniature size. School felt brand new, tons of people were talking to him, trying to get close to him for Royal. Royal had the time of his life, receiving lots of attention from the students. In every class period Royal just sat next to Nicko’s desk, watching like a statue, or he slept curled into a ball or slept in his back. He fed Royal his lunch, because he didn’t know when the last time Royal actually ate. Sixth period rolled around before he knew it, only one class period to go before he was able to ride Royal to the park. “Oh Nicko.” A voice called out, in a singsong. It was a voice that Nicko dreaded. A girl with slightly tan skin, blue eyes, and blonde hair sat next to him. She wore blue jeans, and a black and white striped shirt with a marigold color jacket. “Hey Chloe.” He said, fabricating joy. The truth was, he wasn't too fond of Chloe. She was one of the run of the mill ‘popular girls’ with lots of friends and flaunts her stature, y’know the whole shebang. If he was being honest though, she didn’t really have any ‘special’ qualities about her that made her stand out. So to him she was just a generic girl who used her popularity to get her way. “Cute dog, let me pet him.” She said, looking over at the sleeping mega hound. Her voice was a poison for Nicko. There she was again, expecting to get what she wanted. She didn't even ask, she just demanded. “No.” He responded, trying to not sound too mean. “You may or cannot pet him.” He put emphasis on his words. The end of the day rolled around and Nicko and Royal exited the building into the courtyard filled with students. He placed Royal down. “Royal, mount size.” The mega hound barked and grew in size. He took a seat on his steed. “I have to get some reins or something like that. My hands are going to cramp holding onto your fur all the time.” He gripped the mega hounds fur. “Walk.” Royal started a small, smooth walk. His body shifted in a hypnotic motion. The students of Eastern Arkansas High watched in awe as he rode Royal. “Royal, jump!” He pointed at the fence at the end of the courtyard. Royal picked up speed, his powerful legs a blurr. Nicko and Royal let out howls as Royal cleared the fence. This was freedom, they both could agree on that. “Oh, this is what it is to be a dragon, hiccup.” He said to himself, spreading his arms out wide, feeling the wind push against him. “I don't even feel the cold anymore.” Royal barked. Passing a speed limit sign of twenty miles per hour. That's when she saw her. Her name was Kerstin and she was a goth he met in the woods a while back. She wore black eyeliner, black lipstick that went perfectly with her dark skin. She was dressed in a collar with spikes on it, she wore her hair into pigtails, she had a black thermal with a black skirt. Black tights hugged her legs, and she had on tall goth boots. She looked to her left, putting her hands up, her black fingerless gloves wrapped around her hand. Nicko shifted forwards, tapping Royal on the shoulder twice. “Royal, stop.” The mega hound slowed its speed to a jog, a trot, then to a complete stop. “Hey Kierstin.” “Hey-Nicko. Cool dog.” She said, looking at Royal. He extended his hand, unsure if she was going to take it. She let out a small smile before taking his hand and climbing onto Royal’s back. She wrapped her arms around Nicko’s waist. “He feels like a ray of sunshine on a summer day! He’s so warm.” She said, the cold being eliminated from her body. Royal barked, obviously enjoying the compliment. “Royal trot.” The mega hound trotted along the sidewalk, his body shifting in a hypnotic way. Kerstin’s grip tightened around his waist. She had an intriguing allure to her that caught his attention. She was a pretty tall girl, taller than Nicko himself. Sure she was a goth but she loved Hello Kitty. He knew a few things about her, they met in school pretty recently. He actually couldn’t remember what they bonded about, but it had something to do about how people suck. He developed feelings for her, because he loved her personality, and the intoxicating pull of a mature woman. However, he pushed his feelings deep inside after all, she was nineteen and he was sixteen. The closeness of their bodies broke one of his defenses. “Where to Ms.Chambers?” He asked. “The mossy rock.” She responded. “You heard the lady, to the mossy rock!” Nicko said. He turned to Kerstin. “Hold on tight.” She blinked. “What?” Nicko let out a howl. Royal picked up speed, howling with him. Kerstin’s grip tightened Chapter three Kerstin shifted her weight, propping herself against Royal. His heat enveloped her like a second skin. “This is so peaceful.” She rested her head on Nicko’s shoulder. He nodded. “This is peaceful.” “So what’s the tea with you and Chloe?” She asked. “Same old, same old. Being so hard to like. She tried to force me to let her ride Royal.” He rubbed the mega hounds fur. Kerstin gasped, feigning shock. “No she did not!” Nicko nodded. “Oh yes she did! That's why at the end of the day, I pulled off with Royal. It was so awesome.” A chuckle slipped through Kerstin’s mouth. He could feel a force pushing them together. He let out a nice sigh. “I love being out here, I can stay out here for hours.” “Haha same.” She agreed. “And homecoming is tomorrow.” He said, unsure if he should ask her. “Would you like to be my date?” He asked, his voice unbelievably calm. She stared off into the distance for a bit, before nodding. “I would love to.” Nicko’s heart fluttered in his chest, he did not expect her to say yes, but he didnt question it, not one bit. Royal’s stomach
