North Charleston Fire Department MEDICATION REFERENCE GUIDE Training Division Albuterol Sulfate 2.5 mg DESCRIPTION Albuterol Sulfate 2.5 mg Albuterol is used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in patients with asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, anaphylaxis, and other lung diseases. It is also used to prevent bronchospasm caused by exercise. Albuterol belongs to the family of medicines known as adrenergic bronchodilators. Adrenergic bronchodilators are medicines that are breathed in through the mouth to open the bronchial tubes in the lungs. They relieve cough, wheezing, and trouble breathing by increasing the flow of air through the bronchial tubes. Classification Beta2 Agonist, Sympathomimetic Action Acts selectively on Beta2 receptor sites in the lungs, relaxing bronchial smooth muscle, decreasing airway resistance, relief of bronchospasm. Although Albuterol is beta selective, it will cause some CNS stimulation, cardiac stimulation, increase diuresis, and gastric acid secretion. Adverse Effects Palpitations, Tachycardia, Anxiety, Nervousness, Dizziness, Tremor, Hypertension, Dysrhythmias, and Chest Pain Contraindications None in the emergency setting How Supplied 2.5 mg / 3 ml Sterile Unit-Dose Vials, each in a foil pouch Dosage Adult: 2.5 mg / 3 ml nebulized Pediatric: 2.5 mg / 3 ml nebulized Special Considerations nset is 2 – 5 minutes.
