English for medical science 1 Medical equipment Lesson (3) الثاني مختبرات طبية Definition: A medical device is any device intended to be used for medical purposes. Significant potential for hazards are inherent when using a device for medical purposes and thus medical devices must be proved safe and effective with reasonable assurance before regulating governments allow marketing of the device in their country. (1) Tongue depressor: Sometimes called spatula is a tool used in medical practice to depress the tongue to allow for examination of the mouth and throat. The most common modern tongue depressors are flat, thin, wooden blades, smoothed and rounded at both ends. (2) Stethoscope: The stethoscope is a medical device for listening to internal sounds of an animal or human body. It typically has a small disc-shaped resonator that is placed against the skin, and one or two tubes connected to two earpieces. 1 English for medical science 1 (3) Sphygmomanometer: sphygmomanometer is a device used to measure blood pressure. (4) Defibrillator: Defibrillators are devices that send an electric pulse or shock to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat. 2 English for medical science 1 (5) Ultrasound machine: Is Ultrasonic devices are used to detect objects and measure distances by using sound waves with frequencies higher than the upper audible limit of human hearing. (6) Ventilator: Is a piece of medical technology that provides mechanical ventilation by moving breathable air into and out of the lungs. 3 English for medical science 1 (7) Electrocardiograph machine: Electrocardiograph is the process of producing an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) a recording of the heart's electrical activity. (8) Magnetic resonance imaging: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to form pictures of the anatomy and the physiological processes of the body. MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields, magnetic field gradients, and radio waves to generate images of the organs in the body. 4 English for medical science 1 (9) Computed axial tomography: A computed tomography scan (usually abbreviated to CT scan; formerly called computed axial tomography scan or CAT scan) is a medical imaging technique used to obtain detailed internal images of the body use a rotating X-ray tube and a row of detectors. (10) X-ray machine: An X-ray machine is any machine that involves X-rays. It may consist of an X-ray generator and an X-ray detector. 5 English for medical science 1 (11) Pulse oximeter: Pulse oximetry is a noninvasive method for monitoring a person's oxygen saturation. (12) Catheter: Catheters are medical devices that can be inserted in the body to treat diseases or perform a surgical procedure. 6
